PART 1

Organizational Background

It all started from a research by a company named “Genesis Foundation” that wanted to

discover a fuel that would efficiently help the company produce electrical energy from various

biomass materials without the use of petroleum. Maximizing the use of reusable biomass materials

such as kanchaha (also known as sugarcane waste) and wood chips. While also reducing the use

of petroleum that will effectively help the environment from the pollution caused by it.

Currently there are three biomass power plants in Negros Island which are located on the

island towns of San Carlos, La Carlota and Manapla are undergoing commissioning phase. They

would convert biomass or organic materials specifically sugarcane waste (also known as

kanchaha) to electricity using a low carbon – emitting process known as circulation fluidized bed

boiler technology.

San Carlos BioPower is already fully operational on the year 2019 and the group has

already developed two more facilities within the Negros Island (South Negros BioPower and North

Negros BioPower) thus creating jobs for thousands of Filipinos. San Carlos BioPower believes in

producing clean energy for the sustainable development and inclusive growth of our shared

communities and environment.

Executive Summary

The project team aims to implement a network structure design for the San Carlos

BioPower Company. It is a starting electricity provider to small electricity businesses within San

Carlos City that promotes to make use of something that can be reusable like buying the wood

chips, “Canchaha”, and other kinds of biomass materials from the farmers instead of burning those

waste materials they make it as a fuel to the machines in the company to produce electricity . The

project team identifies the maintenance of the network system which is included in the installation

of the proposed network design for the organization to be used. The proposed network which the

team designed offers enhancement and maintenance of the current network infrastructure of

BioPower company, it improves the productivity and provide them a better and reliable network

infrastructure. When the network infrastructure is set up properly, the organization will experience

improved connectivity and speeds that will give better performance. The project team understand

the importance of having a stable and secure network infrastructure and ensuring that critical and

data applications are available 24 hours daily. A better and improved scalable network can be

easily changed without the need of a complete overhaul. The network needs to be functional and

reliable at all hours to avoid distractions and disruptions that could affect the bottom line. The

success of this project depends with the design of the infrastructure.

Scope of The Project

The proposed network design adapts model for designing reliable, scalable and to make it

a cost-efficient in the part of the organization. The project team proposed a structure hierarchical

network design that has three layers, these are core, distribution, and access layer. The design that

the team proposed provides different network technology such as Wide Area Network (WAN),

Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP),

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Frame Relay, Telnet, Access Control List (ACL)

and other network technologies that are compatible with the network infrastructure of San Carlos

BioPower. All of these plans aim to provide and improve the current network infrastructure of San

Carlos BioPower. The chosen organization belongs to the medium size network which uses more

than 200 devices. The organization also has a connection on their international office in Germany

and local office in Bacolod City. The project team believes that paying little mind to the network

size and requirements, is a basic factor for a successful usage of the network design is to pursue a

decent organized network design standard.

Goal of the Study

The study aims to design a better network infrastructure for San Carlos BioPower, that will

help them in their daily operation. The study involves improving the current network and providing

the needs of San Carlos BioPower with regards to network infrastructure. Although the

improvement of the current technology is generally driven by business needs to begin with,

organization ultimately come to rely upon these same technologies in order to function over a

longer term. Improving or redesigning the security and efficiency of the organization’s network is

one of the project team’s goal. The second goal is to improve the performance through the

implementation of a new network or the upgrade of an existing network. Increase the performance

of the access layer by implementing Fast Ethernet and dedicated switch ports for all systems.

Increasing network availability is a technical goal usually achieved through the implementation of

network redundancy features. Hierarchical network model is actually a useful high-level tool for

designing a reliable network infrastructure. It actually breaks the complex problems of a network

design into smaller and more manageable areas.

PART II

CURRENT NETWORK

The illustration shows the current network infrastructure of San Carlos Biopower. Some

devices are obsolete which is also a threat to the company’s network security and data

confidentiality which mostly are routers and switches.

Connected to the service provider is the OptiX RTN 905 which gives the company

additional theft security while providing them various service interfaces, large bandwidth, and easy

scalability. The company also has only one (1) router located on its core layer. The distribution

layer is the Sophos SG 135 where the Information and Technology Department uses to manage

and monitor the network. On the other hand, the access layer consists of one (1) switch on the right

portion for same-building departments. The nearest department connected to the switch is directly

connected using FastEthernet Cables while others are connected using a Linksys wireless bridge.

While on the left portion, consists 5 (five) switches for the departments located on the other

buildings. To connect these departments to the network, the company uses a stronger wireless

bridge to avoid signal interruptions that could stop the operation.
