Sermon-Health Emphasis Day

Topic: “Jesus is our Healer”
Thesis: “Only in Jesus can we find true healing”
Introduction:

• The Book of John was written to prove that

o “Jesus is the Christ,
o and by believing you might have life through His name” (John 20:30, 31).
• John was overwhelmed with so many things that Jesus did. He said if everything was
written; not all the books in the world could hold it (John 21:25).
• Therefore, he wrote what was necessary to prove that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God.
• John’s style of writing is different from the other gospel writers:
o He did not record many parables
o He did not record many healing miracles
o He didn’t attempt to give a history---or to use deductive reasoning. He went
straight to the point—IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God and the Word was God.
o Most of the incidents he recorded either took place in Jerusalem during a feast
day or (if not in Jerusalem), while a feast day is near (see table).
o This is so, because these incidents would have drawn much attention from the
public, especially the leaders.
o Jerusalem was the central meeting place for the Jews; especially on the three
main feast days (Passover, Pentecost and Feast of Tabernacles).
o John followed a pattern of incident/teaching in the first part of the book (see
table).

• All these incidents refer to how Jesus brought salvation to each person in their unique
situation. But in the end, it is salvation that He brought to them.
• For the woman at the well, she needed to stop chasing the things of the world to find
happiness. Happiness is to be found only in One Person.
• For Nicodemus, he needs to know that his intellect; his position in life cannot satisfy the
soul. He must be born again. He must surrender his life to Jesus.
• For the paralytic, Jesus is the only true Healer. Whether it’s the ripple of the water,
medication, bush tea, or charcoal, Jesus is our Healer. He needed to stop looking to the
rippling water and look to Jesus for Healing.
• The key verse is v. 17, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
• The point is made clear in three statements/commands that Jesus made to the man.

I. John 5:1-6 – The first statement is, “Do you want to be healed?”
a. This is a similar point to what Jesus made when He said
i. to the woman at the well, “give Me to drink”. If you knew who asked
you, you would have asked
ii. To Nicodemus, “you must be born again”
iii. To Phillip, “where shall we buy bread that these may eat”.
b. It exposes the impossible situation and points to Jesus as the only solution.
c. It calls us to stop looking to the things of this world and look to Jesus.
i. Because the man was looking at his situation without Jesus, he said, “Sir, I
have no one…”
1. If you will help me, please be my partner.
2. Wait with me until the water ripples so that you can help me into
the water before others. Be my friend. Give me an advantage over
others.
3. This is because the man was looking to the water for healing; not
to God.
4. If he was looking to God, and knew who asked the question, he
would say, “yes sir, please heal me.”
ii. As Phillip responded, “how can we find so much food to feed so many
people?”
iii. Nicodemus, “How can a man be born when he is old?”
iv. The woman, “how can you give me water when you have nothing to
draw?
d. In other words, “Yes sir, I want to be healed, but my only chance has been
eluding me.”
e. Application:
i. When we look to the things of this world, that is the answer we will get.

ii. People will tell us, inorder to find healing, there is this one product that
you need to buy (spend thousands of dollars). There is this one place you
need to go.
iii. But, we need to look to Jesus our Healer.
iv. How does Jesus heal us?
II. John 5:8-9—Get up, take up your bed, and walk
a. We need to understand, that it is Jesus who created the body.
b. “Christ is the true head of the medical profession. The chief Physician, He is at
the side of every God-fearing practitioner who works to relieve human suffering.
While the physician uses nature’s remedies for physical disease, he should point
his patients to Him who can relieve the maladies of both the soul and the body.
That which physicians can only aid in doing, Christ accomplishes. They endeavor
to assist nature’s work of healing; Christ Himself is the healer. The physician
seeks to preserve life; Christ imparts life.” Ministry of Healing, page 110.
c. “The Saviour in His miracles revealed the power that is continually at work in
man’s behalf, to sustain and to heal him. Through the agencies of nature, God is
working, day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment, to keep us alive, to
build up and restore us. When any part of the body sustains injury, a healing
process is at once begun; nature’s agencies are set at work to restore soundness.
But the power working through these agencies is the power of God. All life-giving
power is from Him. When one recovers from disease, it is God who restores
him.” Ibid, 110.
d. The same Word that spoke life into the man, is the same Word that “spake and it
was done; who commanded, and it stood fast.”
e. Hence John made the points he did in John 1—“In the beginning was the
Word…”
f. Jesus not only created the body; He sustains it.
g. Hence, He said to the Pharisees, “My Father is working until now and I work…”
i. I do the same work as the Father.
ii. He cannot stop working; less the sun will stop shining, the breeze stop
blowing, life will cease.
h. Therefore, at the words of Jesus,
i. The man’s nervous system started working
ii. His limbs were restored
iii. The man was completely healed
iv. Only based on the words of Jesus.
i. The same applies to our spiritual life:
i. You might be in sin for 38 years or more
ii. Jesus can forgive, heal and restore in a moment
iii. All we need to do is to claim the promises, “if you confess your sins….”

iv. We can’t explain it, but at that moment a miracle takes place
v. As many as receive Him, to them gave He power to become sons of God.
j. So, the man takes up his bed and is walking. But, it was the Sabbath day. The
Pharisees questioned him, “why do you carry your bed on the Sabbath?”
i. The Pharisees were so blind that rather than celebrating with the man for
being healed, they accused him of Sabbath breaking.
ii. They couldn’t see that the only way the man could “break” the Sabbath,
was that a miracle must have taken place in his life.
iii. For 38 years the man was an invalid; could not break the Sabbath
according to their rules. Couldn’t do anything for himself; they did not
express any care for him.
iv. Yet, now that they see him healed, rather than rejoicing with him, they
accused him of Sabbath-breaking.
v. These folks are more concerned about their rules; than about people’s
welfare.
vi. The man was so excited to go and share what great things the Lord had
done for him.
vii. He would not expect that there would be anyone who could find fault
with such a miracle.
k. The man said, “the One who healed me, said to me ‘take up your bed and walk.’”
i. For this bed is not only a mat anymore; it is now my testimony. When my
family sees me; when my former friends sees me; they will not see a
Sabbath-breaker; they will see a miracle.
ii. My friends (or former friends) need to know that Jesus is not only a
Healer, but He is the Son of God.
iii. Usually, it would be wrong to carry your bed on Sabbath, but, your bed is
now your testimony.
iv. It is your evidence that Jesus is the Son of God; that Jesus has control
over nature, just as the Father does. This man told me to “break the
Sabbath”. This Man told me to take up my bed and walk.
l. Jesus was deliberate in disappearing among the crowd, as He wanted the man to
testify of Him.
i. That is the evidence that He is equal with the Father.
ii. Because the same work that the Father does, He does also.
III. John 5:14—See, you are well! Sin no more that nothing worse may happen to you.
a. If Jesus is our Healer, then He alone has the right to tell us how to treat the body.
b. “See, you are well”; “see, you are healed?”
c. In other words, live like you are healed; do not live in a way that the healing is
reversed.
d. I have restored you and placed back your health in your hands.

e. Your health is in your hands.
f. The maintenance of your health is in your hands.
g. You decide what you want to do with it. Jesus did not only command the man to
be healed; He commanded him to do what it takes to remain well.
h. If we recognize Jesus as our Healer, we should follow the rules of Jesus regarding
how we treat the body.
i. If we recognize Jesus as our healer, we are going to:
ii. NEWSTART
IV. Conclusion/Appeal
