The Multiple Effects of Social Media to Juveniles in the 21st Century

We live in this moment where the world has become more complex, open and easier. We
are continuously evolving and upgrading with technology. At the same time, communication
media holds a dominant position in this culture and, in most cases, overwhelms certain sections
of society that try to adapt to the new environment. To the youth, social media have become
prominent to our life. We have engaged so much in social media without realizing the multiple
effects of this in our lives, may it be positive or not? Although, there are positive aspects for
social media but does that defies the numbering dangers of using these social media sites?

In education, as we engage in social media our teachers can easily collaborate and
communicate with us. We will have an easy and free access to different sources online. Most
specially, this help students in to discuss topics and assignments without having to spend time
and fare to meet each other. But then, this also increases the possibilities of cheating among the
students. Also, social media keep us all informed and updated since digital networks offer social
movements a simple, inexpensive way to disseminate information and mobilize people. But
through this, it makes people specially the youth to be vulnerable in a crime. For example,
informing our new found friend or posting online that we are on a gate away with our family,
with this information they will use this as a chance to do their deeds.

Not only have these but social media also set our standards high. We have become so
ungrateful of the things that we have. Our life revolved around numbers, where we depend our
beauty on the number of likes that we will get. The number of friends’ list that we have to show
how a role model we are. This also became the place of formality in norms perspective where we
should always be presentable or we will be called names and judged. This has affected mainly
our self-development. This made us develop negatively where we nurture insecurity and the
feeling of being not enough. We have neglected the things the we love to follow those that are in
trend. We have forgotten to see the value of ourselves as we continue to deeply take part in this
social media craze.

Truthfully, websites in the social media can not only make us more knowledgeable but
also more incompetent. We share too much with too many sometimes and we have to be mindful
of that. In this moment, we are all pressured by the social media norms circulating around us and
our beliefs, opinions, and concerns are affected. We should be knowledgeable and mature in
facing difficulties regarding on the right usage of these websites. In general, when approaching
these issues, we have to be aware and careful. Let us all open our eyes and see the scheme social
media is making for us. Social media is a tool- not a lifestyle and definitely not a standard setter.
