Characteristics of Dyslexia

Oral Language
A person with dyslexia usually will learn to talk lately since small. A person with dyslexia
also hard to pronounce words and also difficult to acquire vocabulary or using age appropriate
grammar. Besides that, he or she with dyslexia will get in trouble in following the directions. The
person with dyslexia will confuse with some words such as “after”, “before”, “right” and “left”
and hard to differentiate those words. He or she that with dyslexia may also hard to learn the
alphabet and rhyming. Word retrieval or naming problems also will be faced by the person with
dyslexia.

Reading

The people with dyslexia will get in trouble when learning to read since small. Those
people with dyslexia will difficult to identify or generate rhyming words or counting syllables in
words (phonological awareness). They hard to remember names and shapes of letter, or naming
letters rapidly. Therefrom, they will face difficulty in recognize certain words such as “the”, “am”
and “said”. The people with dyslexia will be persistent confuse with “b”, “d”, “p” and “q” (beyond
first grade). Besides that, they also will misreading or omitting common short words such as “a”,
“you”, and “so”. The person with dyslexia usually has a poor reading comprehension during oral
or silent reading and this is often due to the words are not accurately read. They will be “stumbles”
through longer words.

Written Language

The people with dyslexia usually face difficulty in organizing written language into
sentences and paragraphs. They also difficult in learning to spell since small. For instances, the
student may do well on weekly spelling tests, but he or she will has many mistakes in daily work.
The person with dyslexia will face difficulty in proofreading. They also commonly confuses
homonyms in writing. For instances, the words such as “their”, “there” and “they’re”.
Other Common Symptoms or Characteristics

The person with dyslexia will face difficulty in naming colors, objects, and letters rapidly,
in a sequence (RAN: Rapid Automatized Naming). They also has a weak memory for lists,
directions and facts. The people with dyslexia may require a longer time to learn the concepts
because they need to frequently see and hear the concepts in order to learn the concepts
successfully. They also will be distracted by visual or auditory stimuli. However, the people with
dyslexia will also consist of positive characteristics. For instances, they may a strong
comprehension of orally presented information. Besides that, they also can solve complex
mathematical problems in their head. Even though, the people with dyslexia are hard to names the
shapes of letters but they are very good in understanding maps and diagrams.

Common Characteristics of other Related Learning Disorders

Dysgraphia (Handwriting)

The people with dysgraphia will have an unsure of headedness. They also have a poor or
slow handwriting. Due to that, the family members or teachers of related suffered patient need to
patiently when they are writing something. Besides that, they will be difficult to recognize the
messy and unorganized papers and also hard to copy the words that located inside it.

Dyscalculia (Math)

The people with dyscalculia are poor in the field of Math. This is due to they face difficulty
to count accurately. They even hard to count by using the number from 1 to 10. They would be
misread the number and cause them hard to do the math questions in life. Apart from that, they
face difficulty to memorize and retrieve the math facts.

ADHD- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Attention)

Usually, the child with attention or hyperactivity disorder are difficult to pay attention
toward something if compare with the other normal child. The child with dyslexia will easily get
a variable attention. This cause them hard to focus on learning when the teacher is teaching in the
class. Besides that, the child with dyslexia usually will be more hyperactive and cannot seat
properly in the room.
Dyspraxia (Motor skills)

The people with dyspraxia usually have a poor motor skills in their daily life. They will
face difficulty to plan and coordinate their body movements. For instances, when they play the
basketball, they will hard to coordinate their body movements and cause them hard to shoot the
basketball properly. Besides that, they also hard to coordinate their facial muscles to produce the
sounds.

Summary for Characteristics of Dyslexia

Lastly and importantly, we have to keep in mind that not all of the children or people with
those characteristics that written in above have dyslexia. The only way to confirm a diagnosis of
suspected dyslexia is to have formal testing of reading, language (including rapid naming) and
writing skills. It’s even more important to understand that dyslexia is very treatable.
