ESSE 2030 Lab 5: A Grand Tour of the PDS

Arinze Anozie

Activity 1
● The Viking Lander 1 had one instrument the camera which is responsible for 3542 images on the
PDS.
● 38 images were taken on the 34th Martin day. This was found by setting the range of the Planet Day
Number from 34 to 34 under the L anded Mission Constraints
● 12b026 is a grayscale picture depicting the rough and rocky of the surface of mars.
● When the .sur is opened in a text editor, a set of parameters are visible which are followed by a set of
random characters that I assume is the actual image data.
● The image was taken on 1976-08-24T06:46:41Z Earth Time or 12.33 local time on the 34th
martian day of the mission.
● The resolution of the image is 230 by 512 pixels.

Rhea was determined to be orbiting Dione based on the simple fact that the detailed image headers
of these images indicated Target Name and Description parameters to be Rhea. Intiutively, it makes
sense that when an eclipse is being captured, the target should be the eclipsing satellite and not the
eclipsed satellite. Hence a quick google search of the term “rhea eclipse of dione” brings up the NASA
page (https://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/resources/606/) of the Cassini Legacy which confirms this
intuition.
