MASS CUSTOMIZATION
BRIEF
Studio DA2 is going to explore tectonic in architecture. Tectonic can be defined as art of construction in relation to func-
tion and design. The challenge is on how architect can bring engineering to an art form for design ideas. This course
introduces structure is an integral part in the process of architectural design, in which we discuss fundamental principle
of structure, different material properties, fabrication techniques and assembly system. By understanding tectonics in
architecture, students are able to explore the design side (architect) and the technical side (engineer) interdependently.
The studio process will be directed in ‘thinking through making’ approach. Students are making their idea with ana-
logue and digital tools, working from raw materials to physical architectural space. Students are urge to play with real
materials, tools and machinery as form of research for informing and evolving a project. Later the students record,
measure, draw and diagram the processing sequence from material to use.
This year we will work towards “Mass Customization”. Mass customization is a manufacturing process that combines the
flexibility and personalization of a product. A custom product to be produced in distinctive combination or modifica-
tion of the modules. Modularity is the mass customization. It bounds the degree of customization of the product and
distinguishes mass customization from pure customized products (Duray et al., 2000). With this advancement, we see
architecture components such as wall, window, column, beam, floor, roof can be specified (custom) as a respond to
certain function, technical and aesthetic.
Respond to this theme, then the programs students can choose between libraries or organic farming. These programs
have the complexity of private space and public space. The challenge to consider is that we design not only about the
subjects: people but also the objects: books/plants. Mass customization modulation carried out by students is expect-
ed to be able to explore material capacity, form composition of objects-space-the person. The exploration may lead to
know creatively how many iteration of design, changes are possible with certain parameters given.

01 | FORM & FORMATION (15%)
A. Wood (technical: Raras/Raymond)
B. Concrete (technical: Anex/Dimas)
C. 3D Printing (technical: Ferry/Jacky)
In the first month, students will do a small exercise on making model with a real material and tools. Students work in a
group of 3 people with specific materials and offer personalised product which explore the form and formation. Need
to consider about the aesthetic of the form, material properties and limitation. The task is to produce 50 iteration of
possible form from the materials. Later select one of the option to be stacked up without glue (interlock system).
We will do a residency in Jatiwangi and have a workshop with the local artist. We aim to explore rammed earth, adobe
brick, clay as potential materials for architecture. Students work in a group, make a prototype modulation from the ma-
terials, try to achieve a form, space and order of an architecture: wall/window/canopy/roof/stair/chair/bookshelf/etc.
04 | PORTFOLIO (5%)
Each student refining images and provides 1 Book catalogue contains all DA2 projects.
OUTPUT: - 2 copies DA2 books (digital and hardcopy) (B5 size)

METHODS
The studio aims to develop a creative approach to architecture and design through drawing, making and narrative
construction. Students explore their ideas through a range of two and three dimensional techniques:
