A new look at history

Memorial Stadium Re-Dedication

The 75th anniversary of El Reno's football stadium, named Memorial Stadium, was in 2019 and
the El Reno Tribune played a key role in developing the plan in conjunction with El Reno High
School for the celebration.

The stadium was dedicated as a memorial to the former EHS students killed in World War II.
The plan to honor the 44 started in the high school's history and English classes and the El
Reno Tribune published for free a series of stories written by the students that highlighted the
service members which paid the ultimate sacrifice. The series was called “Remember the 44.”
Work on that series prompted EHS instructor Brian Rukes to form a plan to create a lasting
memorial for the 44 which would stand outside the stadium and would be dedicated the week
of the 75th anniversary.

The Tribune followed and detailed the memorial plan from drawing board to unveiling. The
paper used its social media platforms to keep the plan in the public eye past the printed papers
as well as help in the fundraising efforts to pay for the memorial.
In the weeks leading up to the re-dedication, the Tribune ran its own staff-produced series on
several former students who were among the 44, visiting with family members as they recalled
their loved ones.

The Tribune was the only newspaper or media outlet on the ground when the B17 “Texas
Raiders” airplane arrived at El Reno Airpark, which was a former military base during WWII.
The plane was brought to El Reno for the re-dedication since many of the 44 and other veterans
served in B17 units during the WWII.
The paper was the first media outlet to show pictures of the finished memorial ahead of the re-
dedication ceremony and covered the event with a staff of three.
The entire coverage of the re-dedication spanned 10 months of 2019.

the top of the monument.
The audience showed its approval
with resounding applause.
