Ergonomics

 The science of designing the machine according to

the human needs is referred as “Ergonomics”

 Machine design should result in minimum fatigue

and maximum comfort to the operator.

 The probability of making mistakes or missing the

steps should be reduced.

 Interaction with the marketing people and

designers for product specifications

 Ergonomics is a branch of science that aims to

learn about human abilities and limitations, and
then apply this learning to improve people’s
interaction with products, systems and
environments.

 Ergonomics is the process of designing or

arranging workplaces, products and systems so
that they fit the people who use them.

Ex: Office chair, table, hospital bed etc

ERGONOMIST FACTORS IN MACHINE
DESIGN

1) Height of operator and machine

2) Movement of hands and legs
3) Range and angle of vision
4) Body posture while doing job
5) Clear access to instructions display
6) Amount of weight that can be lifted
7) Amount of force that can be applied
8) Size of the Levers and hand wheels

OBJECTIVES OF ERGONOMICS

1) Enhance human performance

2) Remove barriers of productivity and performance
3) Reduce risk of injury
4) Improve business benefit

BENEFITS OF ERGONOMICS

1) Design is user-friendly
2) Reduce cycle time, scrap time, time spent in rework.
3) Less manpower is required
4) Safe operation and less chances of making mistakes
5) Less rejection and thus less wastage
