INTRODUCTION :
To bring awareness on the advantages accrued in terms of transformer reliability and efficiency improvements by
undertaking rigorous testing of transformer raw materials as well to impart knowledge on the various testing &
evaluation techniques for these raw materials, ERDA is organizing a two day Workshop on “Testing & Evaluation
of Transformer Raw Materials”.
ERDA’s Materials Laboratories are fully equipped with NABL accredited/BIS recognized facilities for evaluation of
all transformer raw materials including Kraft insulating paper as per IS: 9335, pressboard as per IS: 1576, gasket
as per IS: 4253, pre-compressed board as per IEC: 60641, CRGO laminations as per IS 3024, & transformer oil
as per IS 335. Further, complete facilities exist for evaluation of densified laminated wood as per IEC 61061 and
laminated board as per IEC 60763. ERDA also undertakes evaluation of Furanic compounds as per IEC 61198
and degree of polymerization of paper as per IEC 60450. A large number of transformer manufacturers all over
the country regularly utilize our test facilities for evaluation of their transformer raw materials such as insulating
materials, CRGO laminations & oil.

INTRODUCTION :
Transmission of electrical power is preferred at extra high voltage or ultra high voltage due to various advantages.
Operations at these voltages requires installation of power equipment of EHV/UHV rating. The reliability of power
transmission and its quality is dependent on the efficiency and reliable operation of the installed equipment in the
system. The performance and reliability of high voltage equipment can be ascertained by performing high voltage
tests as per national and international standards. ERDA has organized this two day workshop to impart knowledge

INTRODUCTION :
Ever growing use of Electronic equipment, Inverters and other non-linear loads is
responsible for introduction of power quality issue namely harmonic in the Power systems
network. Integration of Renewable energy power plants and usage of electronic equipments
in the plant are also nowadays of a bigger concern. Electrical and Electronic equipment can
mal-function or may be seriously damaged or even may fail when subjected to these power
quality issues and disturbances cause thereof. ERDA is organizing a one day workshop on
“Power Quality Measurement & Mitigation Measures” on 8 August 2019 to impart knowledge on
power quality issues and its importance of measurement along with mitigation measures.
The workshop will lay stress on practical aspects of power quality issues and also laboratory

“Transformer Testing Techniques”

INTRODUCTION :
The most critical component of any electrical network is the transformer. To ensure the operational
reliability of the distribution network, the Department of Heavy Industries (DHI)-Government of India
has mandated compulsory BIS certification of distribution transformers of up to 2.5 MVA, 33 kV class,
as per requirements of IS: 1180-2014. The major tests which determine the quality of the distribution
transformers are the temperature rise, short circuit and the impulse tests. The purpose of distribution
transformer testing from the user viewpoint is to demonstrate that the apparatus meets the guaranteed
specifications. From the manufacturer view point, the tests provide a check on the design, materials and
the manufacturing process used and enables continuous improvement of the product. ERDA is
organizing a one day workshop on “Transformer Testing Techniques” on 16th August 2019 to impart
knowledge of different type of routine, type and special testing methods including impulse, short circuit
& temperature rise tests on transformers, interpretation of test results, standard requirements of IS :
1180-2014, test equipment etc. The workshop will lay stress on practical aspects of transformer testing
through actual laboratory demonstrations of various tests.

INTRODUCTION:
Switches, three pin plugs and socket outlets are extensively used in industries as well as commercial
& residential complexes. Defective and unsafe switches, three pin plugs and socket outlets can
cause electrical accidents, leading to loss of life and property. Testing and evaluation of wiring
accessories enables demonstration of product reliability and also provides information to product
designers for making incremental product improvements in terms of functionality and cost.
ERDA is organizing this two-day workshop to impart knowledge on evaluation of wiring accessories
as per various national and international standards.
WORKSHOP CONTENTS
 Type testing of wiring accessories for Domestic switches as per IS 3854:1997, Socket-outlets
and plugs as per IS 1293:2005, Bayonet lamp holders as per IS 1258:2005, Ceiling roses as per
IS 371:1999, Electronic fan regulators as per IS 11037: 1984.
 Equipment / instrumentation used for testing & evaluation including calibration aspects.

INTRODUCTION :
Cables play significant role in electrical power systems for transfer of electrical power. They are used
in domestic wiring, home appliances, railways, industrial & urban distribution systems and also find
special applications in lifts and conveyers. Polymer insulated cables like PVC and XLPE insulated
cables are widely used in electrical power distribution systems. While, PVC insulated cables are
generally used for low voltage applications, XLPE insulation is used for both low and high voltage
applications. Similarly, specialized elastomeric cables are used in traction application where high
flexibility is required and Flame Retardant Low Smoke [FRLS], Zero Halogen Fire Retardant [ZHFR],
Fire Survival Cable [FS] cables, are specially used for flame retardant applications. In India, all
these types of cables are manufactured and utilized. Hence, evaluation of these cables as per various
standards is of critical importance to ensure the continued safety of our power transmission &
distribution networks.

particular wind and solar energy. India is also considering renewable energy resources as alternative
for future energy needs. Also Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India
has targeted capacity addition of 175GW of renewables by 2022, which include 100GW from solar,
60GW from wind and balance from other renewable resources. These renewable energy sources,
when integrated with grid poses various challenges to grid.
