‘TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO FIRE SERVICE Ww. LR AND ESSENTIAL SERVI: Ss PRELIMINARY FIRE HYDRANT APPROVAL INSTALLATION GUIDELINES APPENDIX A FIRE HYDRANT ACCESS AND PROTECTION 1.1. Fire hydrants shall be located adjacent to public streets and access roads. 1.2. Fire Hydrants shall be located on the road reserve and shall be situated no less than one hundred and twenty two centimeters (122cm), but no greater than two hundred and thirteen centimeters (213em) from a public street and access road. 1.3. So far as is reasonably procticable, Fire Hydrants shall be installed on the boundary between lot subdivisions, unless otherwise permitted by the Chief Fire Officer. 1.4. A clear space of no less than ninety one centimeters (91cm) shall be maintained around the fire hhydrant, Building elements, signs, shrubberies, trees, bushes or other landscaping elements shall not be located within the 3 ft. clear space around the fire hydrants, Parking/loading spaces and landscaping fare considered an obstruction, 1.5. No fire hydrant shall be placed closer than four meters (4m) from the face or overhang of any building to be protected. 1.6. All boundaries with respect to lot or property boundaries shall be clearly identified on site with sixty centimeter (60cm) tall markers painted with florescent orange paint or with florescent orange tape altached.at the top of each marker, 1.7. Where in a commercial or industrial occupancy a hydrant may be exposed to impact from vehicles or machinery, Bollards or guard posts, shall be installed, and shall comply with the following: Constructed of ductile iron, steel, or approved materials not less than one hundred and two N ie millimeters (102mm) in diameter. Spaced no less than ninety one eentimeters (?1¢m) from the face of the fire hydrant. Set not less than ninety one centimeters (91cm) deep in a concrete footing of not less than forty: five centimeters (45cm) in diameter. iv. Each FHIT shall be made of concrete and shall be no less than three hundred millimeters 300mm) tall, two hundred millimeters (200mm) wide, and one hundred and two millimeters (102mm) deep. 1.8.2. Each FHIT shall be cast into the concrete platform so as to prevent removal of the FHIT, 1.83.Each FHIT shall have affixed to its front facing the roadway an Emergency Yellow Information Plate no less that one hundred and twenty millimeters wide and two hundred mi (200mm) tall 1.8.4.The Information Plate shall carry a Black H with the nominal size of the water main to which the fire hydrant ii concrete platform, a Fire Hydrant ters alled in centimeters at the top, the distance in centimeters from the fire hydrant Page 1 of 7 operating nut to the main , and the bury depth of the fire hydrant at the bottom as indicated in appendix C. 2. FIRE HYDRANT INSTALLATION _ 2l. All Fire Hydrant(s) shall be affixed to a Water Main, not less than one hundred and two millimeters (102 mm) in diameter, which shall be connected to the Water and Sewerage Authority (W.A.S.A.) Water Distribution System. 2.2. Where approved by the Chief Fire Officer, Fire Hydrants shall be installed to a private fire suppression ‘water distribution system designed to provide the specified flow rate and pressure. 2.3, Each hydrant shall be installed to an independent Control (Foot) Valve, which shall be installed within an accessible and clearly cavered identified valve chamber. 2.4, Each Fire Hydrant and control (foot) valve shall be installed on a concrete platform no less than one hundred and eighty eight centimeters (183 em) long and one hundred and twenty one centimeters (122 em) wide.(see appendix C), 2.5. Each concrete platform shall be no fess than one hundred and two millimeters (102mm) thick 2.6. Where a drain, or some other opening must be crossed to gain access no less than one hundred and twenty two centimeters (122 cm) wide and one hundredand two millimeters (102 mm) thick shall be constructed across said drain or opening, and shall be joined to the fire hydrant fire hydrant, a concrete walkway conerete platform. 2.7, Each Fire Hydrant shall be oriented so that it faces the roadway or main access passageway for fire service appliances, 2.8. Bach Fire Hydrant shall be installed so that it sits no less than sixty-one centimetérs (61em) from the rear of the concrete platform to the centre of the operating mut and no less than sixty-one centimeters (61cm) from each side of the platform. 2.8.1. Each Fire Hydrant shall be no less than ninety-one centimeters (91em) from its operating nut to the operating nut of the control (foot) valve at the cenize of the valve chamber. 28.2. Each Control (Foot) Valve Chamber shall be installed no less than thirty-one centimeters (31¢m) from the front of the concrete platform, and no less than siaty-one centimeters (6lem) from the sides of the conerete platform 2.8.3. Each Control (foot) Valve Chamber shall be no less than forty-one centimeters (41em) in diameter, 2.8.4. Each Control (Foot) Valve Chamber shall be installed so that the valve chamber cover is level ‘with the surface of the concrete chamber. 2.8.5. Each Control (Foot) Valve Chamber shall have at the center of its cover a lid designed to allow for observation and access 10 the Control (Foot) Valve without having to remove the entire Chamber cover. ; 2.86. Each Control (Foot) Valve Chamber shall be installed so that it can mitigate intrusion and retention of water or debris 2.8.7. Bach Control (Foot) Valve shall be installed so that its operating nut is located at the center of the access lid in the Control (Foot) Valve Chamber 2.88. All Traffic Model Pedestal (Pillar) Fire Hydrants shall be installed so that the Traffic Safety Flanges and Bolts are no less than one hundred and two millimeters (102mm) but no greater than fone hundred and fifty three millimeters (153mm) above the finished surface of the concrete platform. Each Fite Hydrant shall be installed so that there is a clearance of no less than forty-five centimeters (45 em) from the centerline of its sixty four millimeter (64mm) hose nozzles to the finished surface of the conerete platform F 3. FIREHYDRANT FITTINGS 3.1. Fach hydrant shall be outfitted with no less than two (2) Instantaneous 64 mm (2 ¥5") female couplings complete with the appropriate washers and metal blank caps adhering to the BS 336:2010 standard or the most recent version of this standard. 3.2, Fire Hydrant hose couplings shall be manufactured from Aluminum alloy, Gunmetal, Stainless Steel, or Bronze Alloy 3.3. The Applicant shall ensure that all fire hydrants are outfitted with the appropriate couplings, washers and blank caps at the time Final Inspection. These are to remain fixed to the fire hydrants or shall be handed over to the inspecting officer upon request. 4. APPROVED FIRE HYDRANTS 4.1. The Chief Fire Officer reserves the right to make amend, add, or remove Fire Hydrants from this list 43. The installation of any Fire Hydrant of a type not approved by the Chief Fire Officer will result in the noneissuance of the Final Approval and the voiding of this Preliminary Approval.
