A plunger is a device that is used to release stoppages in plumbing. The tool consists of a
rubber cup with an attached stick "shaft", usually made of wood or plastic. A different bellows-like
design also exists, usually constructed of plastic. For the common plunger, the cup is pushed
down against the drain opening, and either pressed hard into the drain to force air in, or is
pushed down until the rubber cup is flattened, then pulled out, causing a vacuum that attracts
material. The intent is to loosen or break up a blockage caused by excessive material in the
drain.
The differentiation in case of pump:

A piston pump is a type of positive displacement pump where the high-pressure seal
reciprocates with the piston.

A plunger pump is a type of positive displacement pump where the high-pressure seal is
stationary and a smooth cylindrical plunger slides through the seal. This makes them different
from piston pumps and allows them to be used at higher pressures.

Essentially plungers are pistons, actuated by hydraulic/penumatic means which are used in
processes such as extrusion. Plungers cannot perform work by themselves.

Pistons are used for tasks like work generation, energy conversion from one form to other. They
may as well be used for the same applications as a plunger, but not vice versa.

Pistons can generate work but a plunger cannot.

if the piston length is less than the length of the stroke, the pump is called a piston pump,
otherwise it is a plunger.

Thanks for A2A. Piston and plunger both are positive displacement pump of reciprocating type.
The difference between both is the swept volume and construction.
The swept volume is more in plunger pump considering same outer diameter of both.
But most on the time in process industry we use plunger pump and we do not need any sealing
ring at the OD of plunger. There is a very close clearance maintained between OD of plunger
and bore of liquid head.
