BUILDING:AMALGAMATION OF
PAST AND FUTURE IN THE PRESENT.

 INTRODUCTION: Adaptive reuse of
buildings is a phenomenon of recycling
old buildings, often retrofitting them
with the introduction of modern services
to cater the needs of modern occupants.
Adaptive reuse: an innovative approach
for generating sustainable values for historic buildings in developing
countries.
While this has been mainstreamed in the West, it is still a nascent
concept in India that presents a huge urban opportunity to conserve
energy and heritage building resources, giving a new life to the mammoth
stock of historic structures that dot our cityscapes-be it Kolkata's port
warehouses, Mumbai's textile mills or cantonment buildings in Delhi.
With the approach towards sustainability we can gain much from the
adapting and reusing buildings , rather than bypassing the process of
demolition and reconstruction.

NEED OF THE STUDY : As the world ages, more and more buildings
need a way to renovate and rejuvenate. Adaptive reuse is a conscious
design method to bring the site once in use back to life . It can be applied
on any building although most commonly used for historic buildings. It
has environmental benefits, energy saving and reactivating dead sites
which maximizes the use of urban spaces helping to control urban sprawl.
Construction and demolition waste is one of the major concerns these
days and methods are being applied to recover them , adaptive resuse
could be on of the approach to lessen the burden. The results indicate
that India generated between 112 and 431 million tonnes of C&DW in
2016 depending upon the assumptions. In a world where mass
production and imitation is the norm, adaptive reuse goes against
thegrain, literally building upon already existing stories, adding new

 AIM: To bring the building back to life with conservational and

conventional methods catering to new contemporary usage .
chapters without rewriting an entire book.

OBJECTIVE:
To study conservation and preservation of buildings in order to maintain
its cultural identity
To study about modern techniques that can bring contemporary changes.
To study about climate responsive and energy efficient methods with
respect to industrial building. Including relation between sustainable
development and built environment.

 SCOPE OF THE WORK:

This research talks about the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings and
how it is a sustainable approach towards development.

METHODOLOGY CHART
Examine of relevant literature : this includes study of journals, books on
conservation and reuse , books on heritage conservation , methods to
rejuvenate a dead site, building evaluation for adaptation.
Historical aspects of the topic: this includes studies that have been
conducted in past, its impact and results.
Analysis and comparison of case studies: case studies will be done to
learn and adapt the ways that has been already implied in real. They
include small level as well as big level interventions.
Interviews of the people near by the case studies to know the relation of
human interaction with those changes .

LITREATURE STUDY:
 THE GREEN BUILDING,LOUISVILLE,UNITED STATES. - studio utilized
a 115-year-old former dry goods store to create over ten thousand
square feet of mixed-use commercial space that employs
sustainable technologies like a green roof, stormwater collection
system, solar panels, and geothermal wells.
 HOUSE OF VANS, UK- The House of Vans London is situated within
the 150-year-old brick arches of the railway lines exiting Waterloo
Station, and is a mixed-use creative venue for Vans and skateboard
enthusiasts, housing an art gallery, creative spaces, screening room,
live music venue, a cafe, several bars, and a three tier indoor
concrete skate park.
HYPOTHESES: Adaptive reuse of industries is a necessity for utilising the
abandoned industries with principles of preservation , conservation and
new construction.
