OBJECTIVES :-

 GENERAL OBJECTIVES

INTRODUCTION :-

meaning of family word ‘famulus’ means servant. In roman the word is
denoted by a group of members connected by a
common descent or marriage.
Family is a small social group. Which is a group
of people organised on the basis of natural love and
affection. It is the fundamental social unit formed in
the society, which provides the safety, security,
rearing of children and for fulfillment of certain
human needs.
Family is considered as an association of
husband and wife with or without children.

5. Known by name :- There is a system of


reckoning descent which may be through either
male or female line and every family is known
by a name that is in family.

6. Rearing & caring of child :- The family


members that is father, mother, grandmother,
rear and care the children. They take all the
stress & tension for caring the children.
7. Protection :- Family provide protective services
to its members by which they feel secure in
home.
8. Satisfaction of sexual needs :- The satisfaction
of sex instinct makes for normal personality. If
the sex instincts are suppressed, then it produces
personality maladjustments & disrupts social
relations. Satisfaction of sex instinct brings the
desire for lifelong partnership among man and
woman.

a) Polyandrous family :- This is a type of


family formed where one woman marries
many men and lives with all of them or with
each other of them alternatively.

type of family, husband goes to live in house

system of family is seen in many parts of
India. In such type of family, wife goes

3) ON THE BASIS OF ANCESTOR OR DESCENT

Family can be classified in to two main forms –
a) Matrilineal family :- In this type of family,
ancestry continues through mother. Mother is
believed to be the ancestor of family. The
rights of each member depend on the relation
to mother.
b) Patrilineal family :- This type of family is
prevailing in most part of India. In this type,
ancestry continues through the father.

4) ON THE BASIS OF NATURE RELATIONS


AMONG FAMILY MEMBERS :-
Family can be classified into two main types –
a) Conjugal family :- The conjugal family
which consists of adult members, among
whom exists sexual relationships.
b) Consanguineous family :- This type of
family which consists of members among
whom there exists blood relationship. Eg.
Brother & sister, Father & son etc.

5) ON THE BASIS OF SIZE AND STRUCTURE :-


Family can be classified into three main types –
a) Nuclear family :- A Nuclear family consists of
mother, father & their biological or adaptive
descendant often called traditional family.

Characteristics of Nuclear family :-


 Stable environment :- Children that grow
up in a single parent household have higher
chances of stability.
 Behavioral stability :- Children get a sense

both parents look after the naturing of
children.
 A sense of consistency :-The children
grown up in nuclear family have a sense of
consistency. This enables them to feel as a
wider whole during get together of any
family function.
 Learning skills :- Children in nuclear
family usually get for more extensive
training in life skills. The mother teaches
the children about relationship skills &
father about handiwork skills, sports skill as
well as how to deal with outside world.
 Sharing responsibility :- Children in
nuclear family learn the sharing
responsibility and roles are performed by
expectation rather than formal instructions.
 Physical & emotional support :- Nuclear
families have more physical and emotional
resources with which they can reinforce the
whole through observing their parents, they
learn how to help in building of family.

b) Joint family :- Joint family in India has been


defined as a group of people belonging to three
or more generations who live under the same
roof, eat food cooked from the same hearth and
participate in common activities. These people,
depending upon the nature of kinship system
have common rights in the property to share
residence & kitchen for members of a joint
family.
Characteristics of joint family :-
 Authoritarian structure :- The power to
take decisions regarding matters related to
family & individual lie in the hands of head
of family.
 Family as an organization :- It implies the
interest of the family as a whole is more
important than individual’s interest. One has
to sacrifice one’s personal wishes, like &
dislike, which go against family norms or
rules or traditions.
 Status of member of family is determined
by their age & relationship :- The status of
a person higher in age is higher in joint
family than person age, similarly person is
respected more because of the higher status in

terms of martial or blood ties.


Eg. A husband, an uncle, an aunt & in laws
are respected because of hither status in
relationship.
 Blood relationship :- Blood relationship gets
preferences over marital relationship. It
implies that husband–wife relationship is
subordinate to father- son or brother-brother
relationship.
 An ideal of joint responsibility :- Everyone
shares the problems of other members of
family & tries to help in whatever manner
can.
 Equal attention to all members :- The
family income is pooled together and needs of
the individual members are met according to
their needs and not according to their
contribution. The joint family system is useful
for agricultural and business based families
because both activities require manpower &
pooling of economic resources such as land &
money.

c) Extended family :- An extended family is


formed when two or more adults from different
generations of a family, share a household. It
consists of more than parents and children. It
may be a family that includes parents, children,
cousins, aunts, uncle, grandparents & foster
children etc.
The extended family may live together due to
many reasons such as –
 Help raise children
 Support for an ill relative.
 Help with financial problem.

8) Educational function :- Home is the first
institution of the child and mother is the first
teacher, who gives primary care. Child
receives the earliest knowledge and experience
in the family.
9) Recreational function :- The family
provides entertainment for its members. The
love between couple, elders and children
serves to create an atmosphere in which every
one of us will find an object, which can
develop positive interest in the child.
10) Religious function :- The family has to
provide some religious instructions to child to
develop thoughts, kind-heartedness and
fulfilling fellow feelings.
11) Maintains status :- Social, cultural values
are to be developed to train the child. Family
is a miniature community. The child learns
honesty, truthfulness, traditions, cultural
pattern and role model activities.
12) Cultural function :- Family keeps the culture
of the society alive. It moulds its members

13) Social function :- To establish status. It is a
socializing agency maintains social control.

Family is considered as the nucleus of all other social


groups. It is one of the permanent institution. Within
family, customs and legal rules are followed to have
smooth and satisfactory functioning of family
members.
