The issues pertaining to ELT/Applied Linguistics that need to be studied.

In my opinion, one of the issues related to ELT/Applied Linguistics that need to be studied is
the way of applying the exact pedagogy to fulfil the needs and interest of the students. We are as a
pre service teacher are aware of the eight approaches and methods which are suggestopedia, direct
method, grammar-translation method, community language learning, communicative language
teaching, total-physical response, audiolingual method and silent way. However, sometimes, the
teachers cannot place which approach to use, suitable with their materials and students’ interest in
order to make the teaching and learning lesson as effective as possible. For example, a teacher
wants to practice his students’ listening skill, and he uses audiolingual method, which usually the
teacher will make us listen to an audio from recorder or speaker. For my opinion, this way of
teaching is not suitable for the students that prefer visual way of learning rather than listening. So,
the teacher can make adjustment by display a video contains voice and animations which they can
remember the visual that related to the voice in the video.

Next issue is the students’ reluctance to speak in second language or English in class. In
school, the students may participate in the class in other skills such as reading, writing and listening,
they behave more unwillingly when it comes to speak in second language. (Savasci, 2014). For
example, when the teacher asks their opinion related to the topic, students are tend to keep quiet
which can make the learning objectives cannot be achieved because the teacher cannot assess their
performance and understanding if they keep quiet. This issue need to be studied because in the
future, some job opportunities need them to speak in English. Furthermore, the quick emergence of
the communication and information technologies (ICTs) requires them to master English since
gadgets and technology is in English in order to use them properly.

Discuss the function(s) of 'problem statement' in a study.

In my opinion, one of the functions of ‘problem statement’ is it is where you can start your
study. It is the core of your study. In simpler words, if you have problems related to your topic, you
can make the research study. However, if you do not know what to write or do not have problem,
you have to problematize. Next, the problem statement that you create or you can find provides the
context for the research study and generate questions which the researcher hopes to answer. Last
but not least, problem statement should hook or attract the reader to read further in your study as it
is in the beginning of your study.
