3.1 Introduction
3.1.2 The proposed alignment starts at Design chainage Km 15.00 near Pango Village
and end at chainage Km 35.00 near Ningging village, 15 kms away from Tuting.
The entire length road stretch passes through Hilly/Mountainous terrain and
almost travels parallel to Siang River, which is a tributary of River Brahmaputra.
3.1.3 The soil and material investigations for entire stretch of project road were
undertaken in accordance with TOR requirements, so as to identify potential
sources of construction materials, their quality and availability at site. This section
deals with the nature of investigations, procedures adopted and the tests
conducted on the soil, fill materials, borrow areas, aggregates and other materials
of construction. All tests were done in accordance with procedures and standards
described in BIS/IRC/AASHTO/BS standards wherever applicable.
3.2.1 The programme for Soil and Materials investigations has been broadly divided
into the following groups:
a. Investigations of existing pavement.
b. Investigation of materials for embankment, sub grade, sub-base and Base
c. Investigation for Quarry sites and construction materials.
d. Investigations for availability of Water
f. Investigations for availability of Fly ash
(i) Soil samples were taken by digging trail pits of size1.0 m x 1.0 m and 1.0
m on the toe of the embankment to get natural moisture content, in-situ
density and other physical characteristics of the subgrade soil, including
CBR both at its natural moisture content and in-situ density by statically
compacting the samples.

(ii) Trial pits were dug on the existing pavement, one in each km to study the
pavement structure. Samples were taken from various layers of the sub-
grade soil to determine natural moisture content and in-situ density. DCP
tests were conducted on the subgrade to determine the CBR at in-situ
density and field moisture content.
(iii) Investigations on borrow materials were carried out to select material for
embankment construction and for granular sub-base.
(iv) Aggregates from the quarry’s sites were tested for their suitability and use
in various layers of the pavement, concrete and bitumen mixes.
(vi) The sources of other construction materials such as, cement, bitumen and
steel were identified.
(vii) Locating sources of water and its suitability for construction of road
pavements, including concrete for bridges and other structures.
3.3.2 For all the above investigations, the samples of soil, sand, crushed rock and
gravel for construction of pavement, bridges and culverts were tested as per the
laid down procedures and conforming to the Terms of Reference.
3.3.3 The quantum of investigations and extent of testing done to achieve the desired
objectives of the Feasibility Study/Preliminary Design Report are also indicated in
this section. The trial pits were dug up to sub-grade level so as to study the
pavement composition, field density and moisture content. Bulk samples were
collected for detailed study of the sub-grade soil. The various types of
investigations were carried out and are summarized below:
(i) Trial pits were excavated adjacent to toe of the embankment on natural
ground for collection of soil samples.
embankment.
(iv) Statistically determine the CBR of the soil at natural moisture and in-situ
density by the use Dynamic Cone Pentameter (DCP).
(vi) Aggregates from various quarries were tested for specific gravity,
absorption, AIV, stripping tests, soundness etc.
3.3.4 The standard test procedures were followed for soil sampling, field and laboratory
testing.
3.3.6 Soil classification was done according to Indian Soil Classification System (IS
1498).
3.4.1 Test pits of size 1.5m x 1.5m x 1.5m were dug up at the edges and centre of the
proposed carriageway to know details of original ground level, soil type and
strength of soil.
3.4.1.1 The detailed study has however been carried out to take samples at each km,
developed moisture density curves for the samples and determined soaked CBR
value at 100% modified Proctor Densities. Selected samples were also molded
with varying compactify effort at OMC and curves developed for density soaked
CBR values. This study helps us to get CBR when densities are between 95-
100% of Modified Proctor Densities.
3.4.1.2 Observations on field moisture content and in-situ density are given in
Table- G/1-1& G/1-2 in Appendix -1. Moisture in the original ground level
varies from 8.9% to 31.7%. CBR values of the original ground level lies in
between 11.7% to 30.2% at their natural moisture content and at in-situ
densities.
The field dry density of original ground level layer has been determined by sand
replacement method / core cutter method according to IS:2720 part 28 or 29
respectively. Bulk density of original ground level is determined at site by
weighing the sample using pan balance and moisture determination by speedy
moisture tests as well as by oven dry method in Laboratory by collecting original
ground level soil in airtight container. Although the samples have been collected
throughout the project stretch. The results of optimum moisture content,
Maximum Dry density, Atterberg’s Limits, sieve analysis and CBRs are given in
Table- G/1-1 & G/1-2 in Appendix -1.
Field moisture content of original ground level samples was determined by oven
dry method as per IS:2720 (Part 2) for every test pit location and test results are

3.4.3.2.1 Grain size analysis was carried out for each soil sample after drying the fraction
passing 4.75mm IS Sieve but retained on 75 micron IS sieve after washing
(IS:2720 (Part -4) - 1985.
3.4.3.3.1 The plasticity indices of subgrade soil were determined as per IS:2720 (Part 5)
using liquid limit device (Casagrande). Typical variation of liquid limit and
plasticity index along the longitudinal profile at a depth of 1m is shown in Table-
G/1-1 & G/1-2 in Appendix -1.
3.4.3.3.2 Based on grain size analysis and Atterberg limits, the subgrade soil is classified
according to IS:1498 - 1987. From particle size distribution of the soil curves were
drawn between particle size (mm) and the percentage passing, The soils are thus
classified into two main groups C1 & C2. The typical Grain Size Distribution
Curve (Group C1 & C2) is shown in from Fig. G/1 to Fig G/5 in Appendix -1 along
with the range of various fractions in the soils.
Compaction method was adopted for remolding the samples at MDD and FMC or
OMC whichever higher and soaked CBR determined in a normal manner. The
test results are given in Table in Appendix -1. Typical curve between Penetration
(mm) and Unit Load Kg/Sq.cm is shown in Fig. G/23 to Fig G/39 in Appendix -1.
It is necessary to develop the entire work to 2 lane with shoulder from existing
intermediate lane within the available right of way (ROW) as far as possible. This
would entail additional earth material. The project stretch project stretch passes
through hill/mountainous terrain, hence most of the requirement will meet from
cut section material within ROW. Based on the earthwork calculation, it was seen
that adequate quantities of high-grade fill is available for preparing top 500mm of
the sub-grade.
The CBR value of test pit samples collected within ROW are presented in below
Table 3.1 and Figure 3.1

Figure 3.1: CBR Values of Borrow Material (within ROW) in Soaked Condition
It is observed that the samples collected within ROW shows CBR in the range of
11.70% to 30.2 %. It is recommended to use borrow material of minimum 8 %
CBR value. Hence the available material from borrow areas can be used for
Embankment and subgrade.
3.6 Sand, Aggregate, High Grade Fill and Granular Sub Base Material
The Consultant conducted field investigation for location of quarry sites for
obtaining suitable construction materials mainly sand, aggregate, high grade fill,
and Granular material.
The Consultant in locating the quarry sites used the following criteria.
• Ease in developing quarry face
• Overburden
• Outcrops with minimum variability in strength
• Closeness to alignment and with access road
• Available quantity
Based on these general criteria two quarry sites are identified along the project
roadway alignment which have been tabulated in Table 3.1. The Location and
Chart of both Quarry are presented in Figure 3.2 & 3.3.

Km 20.000 Palsi Quarry Stone/Sand Yes
Km 35.000 (End of
Project)
Km 45.210 Palsi Quarry Sand/Aggregate Yes
The above quarry has adequate quantities of material in all types of grading and
at very convenient distances from the road.
The other construction materials such as Bitumen, Cement, steel, etc. are
available from two source:
• Open market of nearby cities such as Itanagar and Pasighat, etc.
• Through BRO departmental store.
The project site is located far from the major cities of Arunachal Pradesh, hence
the material procured from the market needs to be an additional cost of lead and
transportation in the material cost.
