Comparative study of the morphology of different species of mangrove tree seeds in

mauban, quezon

Background of the Study

Pareja, 2014, p1

The total area of mangrove forests was 137, 760 sq km in 118 countries and territories
in the tropical and subtropical regions regions of the world (Spalding et al., 1997).
According to 2011 Philippine Forest Statistics, the philippines has a total mangrove
forest area of 247, 362 ha. In Quezon province, it was recorded that there was 10, 688
ha of mangrove forests.

Agdangan, Quezon has a total land area of 3,480 ha (Denr as cited by PICTO, 2011) .
Based on 1975 topographic maps produced by Natural Mapping and Resource
Information Authority (NAMRIA), the municipality has an estimate of 157.62 ha of
mangrove forest. However, the 2000 satellite image reveals that the municipality had
52.79 ha of mangrove areas. Recorded mangrove forest loss covered 104.83 ha or
66.51% reduction (Post-RSA, MERF Inc., 2006) which includes certain part of the five
barangays of Agdangan.

Fishponds were established within the mangrove sites but the precise measurement of
converted land area was not yet calculated. It was believed that almost 50% or more of
the remaining mangrove sites were already replaced by fishponds (Montañez, 2013a).
Prior to this, planting of mangroves was conducted at 0.5 ha for reforestation purpose
witn 1000 number of seedlings planted last 2000 and about 10,000 number of seedlings
in 2012 (Montañez, 2013b).

P2

Mangrove forest conversion to fishponds started in 1960s which aimed to increase fish
production for the fish production for the culture of milkfish and prawns (Malena et al.,
2000). Fishpond areas were estimated 75,548 ha in 2003 and increased to 91,077 ha in
2011 within the country within the country, while in Quezon province, there was 1,438
ha of fishponds (Denr-FMB, 2011).
