EXERCISE NO. 3
“Hydrographic Survey”

I. Objective

-To find the distance of each corner from a part of the lake using theodolite and stadia rod .

II. Equipment / Apparatus Used

- Theodolite
- Marking pins
- Stadia rod

III. Procedure

- We find a spot that will scope the whole part of the lake
- We illustrate or draw a figure of the lake
- We set the up theodolite to the desired spot
- Place the stadia rod in each desired corner
- By using the given formula, compute the distance from the theodolite to each of the corners of
the lake
- Obtain also its horizontal angles
IV. Data and Tabulation

COMPUTATIONS

The computation used in this field work is by finding its distance using the formula

Upper – Lower / (tan theta/2)

; Theta is the zenith angle

We repeated this process from corner 1 to corner 12

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

By following the instructions given by the professor, we have obtained the desired results.
First is to set up the theodolite correctly and that there is no elevation from the theodolite to the
stadia for easier computations. The only difficulty in doing this field work is the reading of the stadia
rod because the farther it is, the harder to read.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

But all in all, the field work was a success. Even though we only computed for the
distance and not the area of the lake. Due to only having one field work, this is the only data that we
have gathered. What we recommend is that always have a good understanding of the field or
experiment that you are doing. It makes everything easier. Even if our team or group is not yet fully
organized or that we have not fully understand the field work, we still obtained some information.
