MUS 139 Band in a Box Project

Purpose: the learning objective of this exercise is to learn how to use BIAB to create backing
tracks for composition, sight-reading and practice purposes.

Help files and videos are available on www.pgmusic.com

Procedure:

1. Type in desired chords or chords using worksheet “compose your own song” into the
cells of BIAB and advancing measures using the tab key. For this exercise use only one
chord per measure. Use simple chords at first then changing them as desired later.
Recognized chord lists are available within the program help menu.

2. Define the length of the song and the number of choruses.

3. Select a desired style from the Style Picker. Take your time and the explore the many
styles the app provides. Note: some styles use Midi sounds and some use Real Tracks.
This is explained in detail in the lecture! Real Tracks do not always display notation or
will they export to a Midi file.

4. Export to desired format for further usage. If you later want to import these tracks
into a digital audio workstation then explore the DAW mode which will be demonstrated
in the lecture.

5. Turn in through the Dropbox located on the ‘shared student files” your completed
project named “yourname” the extension will be automatically added.

ALL PROJECTS NEED TO BE TURNED IN NAMED: “yourname”

IMPORTANT: do not save files directly to the server directory from within the
application. Save to your local directory (data drive) first, then use drag and drop
to place files into the Dropbox.
