A teacher needs to be a natural born leader in the classroom. If a teacher can effectively manage a
classroom, the students instinctively follow and respect them. It is important as a teacher to be a
positive role model for students and to be someone who they can trust. During my time in practicum for
PS2, I aim to establish this mantra with my students.

My goal as a teacher is to make an impact on young adolescent lives. I want to be a role model in each
child’s life and inspire the next generation. I would love nothing more than to see years down the line
my past students being successful acting members of our community in wherever their passions lie.

I will establish a classroom that is safe, welcoming, engaging and exciting for every student. I want to
emphasize an inclusive environment for all students and that no child should be left behind. Every child
has the potential to thrive and I believe that it is my responsibility to help each child find their abilities. A
goal of mine would be to make kids want to come to school and really look forward to attending
everyday. I believe that through encouraging and embodying a positive and welcoming personality I will
be able to make quick connections with my students that I can further grow upon during my time in my
placement.

I want to make positive lasting relationships with each and every student that I get the privilege of
teaching, while maintaining communication and respect with my fellow staff, teachers, and parents. I
want to reassure students and parents that we all share a common goal, and that is to see every child
succeed.

In order to achieve these goals, there are a few strategies that I will plan to implement to maintain
leadership and structure in my class. In doing so, this will maintain a balance of fun and order during my
time teaching.

1. Scanning the room is essential to gain a quick and effective feel of the students as a whole.
When scanning the room a teacher will be able to detect students who may need extra support
or who are struggling to stay on task. Scanning the room is an effective strategy to use daily in
your class because you are offering support to students who need it without singling them out
and provides a sense to the teacher whether your class is succeeding or struggling on work
assigned.
2. Teacher “with-it-ness” is being prepared, present and ready for anything that may come your
way as a teacher. It is having that willingness to provide your best for your students daily and
having a positive and driven attitude. With-it-ness is also staying up to date on new technology,
learning strategies, and teaching methods for your students. It is your responsibility as a teacher
to maintain career-long learning and PD sessions to provide new and different resources in your
classroom for students. |In doing so, you are providing the best and latest opportunities for
students to thrive in your classroom. If you are well organized, planned, and up-to-date on
current issues, technology, and learning tools you will be able to run and lead a successful
classroom.
3. It is important while giving whole class instruction to have strong teacher presence that focuses
student’s attention towards you. By maintaining high teacher status and a powerful posture will

inform your students that what I am doing and saying is important and the students need to be
listening and respecting me at this time. It is important that while instructing the entire class to
use appropriate tone, infliction and volume of your voice and move around the room to engage
all students in what your saying. I believe that if you have successfully mastered whole class
instruction students will be eager to engage in the lesson, ask questions and share their own
understandings and inquiries about the topic.
4. One-on-one instruction will be used to provide further clarification and expectations to
students. It is not meant to call out and degrade students who need further explanation. Thus, it
is important to act in a low teacher status when interacting individually with students. Individual
instruction will allow further support for students to understand the material. This is a great
opportunity to discover how students work and learn. I would even first approach a student
individually by asking them something unrelated to school to grow a stronger personal
relationship with them and then offer further clarification and tools for that specific student to
help them be successful at accomplishing the task ahead of them.
5. It is important as a teacher to act how you’d like the students to act/behave. As a teacher, you
need to treat others the way you want to be treated, with the utmost dignity and respect. This
includes maintaining a sense of professionalism, acting polite, kind and understanding towards
all students regardless of how students may talk and act towards you. In addition, it is important
to talk to students as if they are mature individuals, youth are smart, capable, and impactful
individuals who each have huge potential and so it is important to talk to them as adults and not
like incoherent babies.
6. It is important to remain calm and keep your cool while teaching a class because no one deserve
to be the victim of your behaviour/negative actions. It is okay to have tough days and not always
feel like you are always there everyday when teaching. However that doesn’t mean that you
shouldn’t attempt to provide your best to the students on a daily basis. It is important to leave
your personal stuff at the door and not to bring that into your teaching or instruction with your
students. Show up and have a positive attitude and calmness to you that will set an example of a
individual who is able to maintain professionalism and accountability to your students.

Behaviour Chart
Bumps of leadership and classroom management are the steps/elevation of intervention that
you take considering the behaviour that is being expressed. For something that is low behaviour
minimal intervention and control of the behaviour is needed from the teacher in order for the
student to understand that the behaviour was undesirable and to change it. However, if a
student was displaying behaviours of high level the teacher would need to approach and handle
the situation in a different manner and attitude. Thus, the level of behaviour determines how a
teacher would approach the situation and handle it (the bumps).
I have provided a few examples of each level of behaviour below, for the purpose of
understanding situations and context |I assumed that all students are in High School.
