Batch Management in MM
********************************
Batch
********
Is defined as the subset of total quantity of the material in stock which is managed separately
from other subset of the same material is called a batch.
A batch is a specific quantity of a material produced in a single manufacturing process, i.e.
under the same conditions thus featuring identical properties. Each batch of material is given as
a batch number. Each batch of a material is tested with regard to relevant characteristics to
ensure it meet the values or with in the range of those characteristics.

Batch Management
***********************
Batch Management can be defined as tagging an alphanumeric or a numeric code to the
material produced or material procured. Every batch number has an inventory quantity
associated with it. This 10 digit code in SAP helps in uniquely identifying a material and the
quantity associated with it.
A partial quantity of production or procurement can be tagged with a batch number that clearly
makes that material inventory unique.
The Batch number generated for the material quantity not only helps in uniquely assorting the
material inventory, but it also stores the characteristics values or the chemical composition or
the product specifications at the time of its production or procurement.
Batch Management specifies how the materials and goods are handled in the form batches that
is we receive the material from the vendor in the form of batches with batch numbers

Batch is maintained at 3 levels

Client Level
**************
Assign a single batch number for a batch regardless of material or location of the batch.
Plant Level
**************
Assign a batch number that is unique to the plant and material but is not applicable across the
organization. This implies that a batch of material can have the same batch number at different
plants within the organization.
Material Level
*****************
Assign a batch number that is unique to the material across all plants. This implies that if the
material is shifted to another plant the batch information of the material.

Batch Determination
*************************
The Batch Management process in not unique to MM, the process is important in
SD,PP,WM.The Batch Management for the Batch Determination process follow condition
technique process.Batch Determination uses condition tables, access sequence, strategy types,
search strategies and and search procedure in order for a batch to be identified in the relevant
area. The batch determination process uses the same time of selection protocol as described in
pricing conditions, that is the use of condition tables and access sequence.

Condition Tables
********************
The batch determination condition table consists of a number of fields that are selected and
records that are created to assign values to those fields.A condition table can be created for
each of the four areas that use batch determination.

Access Sequence
**********************
The batch determination access sequence will access condition records from the condition table
through access number. For each strategy type there is a batch determination access
sequence. This batch allows the batch strategy type to access the condition table in the correct
sequence.

Strategy Types
******************
The batch strategy type is the specification that tells the system what type of criteria to use
during the batch determination process. A batch strategy type contains the access sequence,
class, sort sequence. In MM batch strategy type is used for different movement types.

Search Procedure
**********************
A search procedure comprises all strategy types that can be used for a particular goods
movement.

Condition Tables
********************
In this IMG activity, you define condition tables for batch determination in Inventory
Management. We wish to use the plant, storage location and the material as selection criteria for
batch determination.

Access Sequence
**********************
In this IMG activity, you define access sequences for batch determination in Inventory
Management. We wish to define an access sequence that the system first uses to find a search
strategy using condition table 527.
Strategy Types
*******************
In this IMG activity, you define strategy types for batch determination in Inventory Management.

Example

You wish to use different batch search strategies for different movement types. For this
purpose, you create the following strategy types:

1.a strategy type with a selection class that uses the shelf life expiration date as search criterion
during batch determination.
2.a strategy type with a selection class that uses the goods receipt date as search criterion
during batch determination.
3.a strategy type without a selection class; this enables you to define the selection class when
you create the strategy record.

Search Procedure
**********************
In this IMG activity, you define search procedures for batch determination in Inventory
Management.A search procedure comprises all strategy types that can be used for a particular
goods movement.

Allocate IM Search Procedure/Activate Check

******************************************************
In this step, you allocate batch search procedures to those Inventory Management movement
types for which batch determination is to be carried out, and activate batch checking.
