What is APA Style?
The American Psychological Association (APA) is one of the largest scientific and
professional associations in the United States. The APA Style is a set of rules and
guidelines provided by this association to ensure a professional standard of scholarly
writing.
Why use APA Style?
We use the APA Style to:
1. Help the researchers and the readers to keep track of the sources consulted
or cited
2. Avoid plagiarism
3. Acknowledge the contribution of other writers and researchers in your work
4. Develop standard and professional practice in scholarly writing

Basic Formats for APA Style
1. For books
Format: Author, F.M. (Year of Publication). Title of work. Publisher
City, State: Publisher
Example: James, H. (2009). The ambassadors. Rockville, MD:
Serenity Publishers.
2. Encyclopedia and Dictionary
Format for Encyclopedia: Author, F.M. (Publication year). Entry title.
In Encyclopedia title. (Vol. XX, pp. XX-XX). City, State of publication:
Publisher.
Example: McGhee, K., & McKay, G. (2007). Insects. In Encyclopedia
of animals (p.175). Washington, D.C.: National Geographic Society.
Format for Dictionary:
3. Magazine and Newspaper articles
Format for Magazine: Author, F.M. (Year, month of publication).
Article title. Magazine title, volume(issue), pp.-pp.
Example: Luckerson, V. (2014, January). Tech’s Biggest Promises for
2014. TIME, 183, 23-25.
Format for Newspapers: Author, F.M. (Year, Month Date of
Publication). Article Title. Newspaper Title, pp. xx-xx.

4. Website or webpage
Website format: Last, F. M. (Year, Month Date Published). Article
