TREND OR FOCUSES IN CURRENT LITERATURE OF SELF-EFFICACY

Based on the readings that have been done, it can be said that from year 2005 to 2015, the trend of
research focuses on self-regulated learning (SRL) that is being utilized in an ESL classroom. For example,
in a research that has been done by Hester de Boer; Anouk S. Donker-Bergstra & Danny D. N. M.
Kostons (2012), the focus is on studying on what is the most effective strategies for self-regulated
learning and the level of its effect on any important aspects in students’ life.

In a similar manner, study by Gerard Effeney, Annemaree Carroll & Nan Bahr (2013), provided with
the data on SRL strategies and contexts for the formation of self-regulatory habits taken from high
school students with parents as little addition for the research data. The trend slightly moves upward
with a research being conducted on analyzing the successfulness of SRL in Problem and Project-
Based Learning. Even though it is a comprehensive subject, its methodology focuses only on text
analysis of previous literature and research. Since it is a text analysis research, the research can be
regarded as reliable but without any new findings in the research field.

Last but not least, a research by Amanda Koehler (2007) from Hamline University provided us with
the data on “Raising Awareness of Self-Efficacy through Self-Regulated Learning Strategies for
Reading in A Secondary ESL Classroom”. The major point in that research focuses a lot on two
aspects: 1) understanding self-efficacy and its relationship to learning; 2) understanding self-efficacy
and language learning. The trend in methodology is quite the same with previous studies which
utilize ESL students for answering SRL questionnaire.

Other than that, journals from students on their application of SRL were also being recorded which
an outcome from the integration of specific self-regulatory reading strategies into reading curriculum
on a regular basis. Thus, it can be highly stated that the trend or focuses in some outstanding
researches that have been done delve intensely on applying SRL in ESL classroom and finding out its
relation with students’ mastery in some important scope of ESL.
