CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The study is focused on producing a bag that can hold umbrellas and

umbrellas that have LED lights. With the help of this product people will be

encourage to use umbrellas more often because of its convenience.

Umbrellas are used to protect a person from sunlight, and rain, that’s why

people are sometimes obliged to carry one every time they go out, but because of

its traditional size we considered it as inconvenient to carry. As years goes by a

foldable umbrella was invented, in which it can be folded and be put in bags, and

because it is foldable it becomes handy, but we still find it difficult to carry

because we still need to use our one hand to hold the umbrella, this is often

experience when we are carrying many things.

Nowadays, people are busy doing many things, it will be hard to find a

person who doesn't carry or doing a thing - cellphones, bags, books, shopping

bags, texting, calling, eating etc. Hence it would be difficult for a person to do or

carry things with one hand only, and as a result we sometimes choose to take the

risk of not protecting ourselves from sunlight and tolerable rains rather than

opening an umbrella which can sometimes lead us to more serious conditions.

People are now more particular with the things that we thought we can't get

through the day without and even find ourselves very attached to it that we can't

even put it aside for a second. Because of those things we find umbrellas as
2

another additional baggage, so rather than carrying it we choose other stuff that

we thought that is more important.

Convenience is use as a top priority in purchasing product. Hiyas came up with an

idea where convenience to a two product combined and came up with “Bag +

Umbrella”, is a bag that is specifically designed for umbrellas. This bag is

designed to hold the umbrella tightly to help the users continue its activities

without need to hold the umbrella.

Hiyas Partnership also considered the number of accidents and crimes

that’s happening during dark and storm, that’s why the proponents invented

umbrellas that have LED (Light-emitting diode) lights. Through this users have

the options to be seen, and may result of decreasing the numbers of accidents and

crimes.

History of Umbrella

Derived from the Latin word “Umbra” which means shade. The first

umbrellas were for protection from sun and were possibly inspired from the

canopy of a tree, which would offer a cool shade from heat of the day. The origins

of the umbrella are most probably China in 11th century B.C. although ancient

sculptures have been found in Nineveh, Persepolis and Thebes (Egypt) depicting

the use of umbrellas. There is also evidence of Umbrella or Parasols being used in

the same period in India.

The word Parasol was derived from the Latin words “Pepare”, which

means prepare, and sol, which means sun. Generally a parasol is now regarded as
3

a sunshade and umbrella as a rain protector, but this distinction only evolved

during the late 18th century.

The first umbrellas (parasols) were associated with rank and there is early

evidence of this is Egypt around 1200 B.C. It was a sign of nobility for a person

to have fair skin and parasol’s protection was widely chosen by royalty to ensure

the skin would not tan. The status symbol of an umbrella was certainly evident in

other parts of the world at this time, not so much for their size, but for the number

of tiers as this implied both wealth and power.

Figure 1: Ancient Umbrella

The umbrella was also considered a symbol in early religious beliefs to be

connected with the Gods of fertility and harvest, death and rebirth.

During the middle ages the umbrellas popularity declined from use,

although it was still used in ceremonial regalia for the Pope. By the 15 th Century,

high-ranking nobility and church dignitaries used different colored “ombrellinos”

and this most likely gave rise to the use of an umbrella as a fashion accessory. It

was the influence of the church that resulted the spread of Umbrellas across whole
4

of Europe. Umbrellas were by now commonplace and many intricate fashion

designs began to appear in 20th century, became more functional item with the

sole purpose of offering shelter, was still for as a shade.

Thousand years of innovation and discovery enabled constant streams of

improvements to umbrella design. Some of the most important inventions in the

field of umbrellas happened in 20th century. Hans Haupt managed to create

foldable pocket umbrella in 1928, and Bradford E Philips secured patent in 1969

which described first “working folding umbrella”. Of course with the rise of the

technology and ever increasing pacing of fashion, umbrellas even manage to find

themselves in many roles – for example as cocktail decorations. Currently

umbrellas represent general utility that is used by everyone, and for that purposes

international manufacturer are producing truly staggering amount of this devices.

Only in United States over 30 million umbrellas are bought annually, with

majority of them being produced in China.

History of bag:

A bag (also known regionally as a sack) is a simple tool in the form of a

non-rigid container. The use of bags predates recorded history, with the earliest

bags being no more than lengths of animal skin or woven plant fibers, folded up at

the edges and secured in that shape with strings of the same material. Despite

their simplicity, bags have been fundamental for the development of human

civilization, as they allow people to easily collect loose materials such

as berries or food grains, and to transport more items than could readily by carried

in the hands.

Cheap disposable paper bags and Plastic shopping bags are very common

in the retail trade as a convenience for shoppers, and are often supplied by the

shop for free or for a small fee. Customers may also take their own shopping bags

to the shop. Although papers had been used for wrapping and padding in ancient

China since the 2nd century BC, the first use of the paper bags (for preserving the

flavors of tea) in China came during the later Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD)

In the modern world, bags are ubiquitous, with many people routinely

carrying a wide variety of them in the form of cloth or leather

briefcases, handbags, and backpacks, and with bags made from more disposable

materials such as paper or plastic being used for shopping, and to carry

home groceries. A bag may be closable by a zipper, snap fastener, etc., or simply

by folding (e.g. in the case of a paper bag). Sometimes a money bag or travel bag

has a lock. The bag likely predates the inflexible variant, the basket, and bags
6

usually have the additional advantage over baskets of being fold-able or otherwise

compressible to smaller sizes. On the other hand, baskets, being made of more

rigid material, may better protect their contents. An empty bag may or may not be

very light and foldable to a small size. If it is, this is convenient for carrying it to

the place where it is needed, such as a shop, and for storage of empty bags. Bags

vary from small ones, like purses, to large ones for use in travelling like a

suitcase. The pockets of clothing are also a kind of bag, built into the clothing for

the carrying of suitably small objects.

Today, different kinds and style of bags are everywhere. They also come

on different sizes for more spaces for your things to squeeze in.

Significance of the study and rationale

The idea of the umbrella has long preceded its invention. Man has been

consumed by his necessity and for shelter, comfort and convenience. It is only

normal that he would want to have these simple, often taken for granted, luxuries

with him at all times. The umbrella is one of the epitomes of those luxuries in a

portable and easy to use device. The umbrella can be used for either protection

from severe weather elements or from the sun.

This feasibility study intends to produce and distribute an umbrella-bag

based on the proposed management, marketing, technical, financial and socio-

economic aspects of the business.

This feasibility study illustrates the circumstances related to the product

such as its benefits and manufacturing elements. This feasibility study also covers

estimates the products’ target market, projected demand, revenue and other

relevant information pertaining to the establishment of the partnership. This

feasibility study also discusses the partnership’s management formation, duties

and responsibilities.

The study will be conducted at first district of Quezon City specifically in

Del Monte. A sample size will be chosen out from the total population of the said

area since it’s where the business location will be placed. The results may vary

from respondents’ preference, age, character, lifestyle, status, culture and

geographic locations. In a nutshell, the results may differ due to some factors like
