2.4 Applications of Right Triangles

1. If the sun is 200 above the horizontal, find the length of a shadow cast by a building that
is 600 feet tall.

2. The height of an outdoor basketball backboard is 12 feet, and the backboard casts a
shadow 17 feet long. Find the angle of elevation.

3. Find the altitude of an isosceles triangle having base 184.2 cm if the angle opposite the
base is68 44 .

4. From a point 100 feet in front of the public library, the angles of elevation to the base of
the flagpole and top of the pole are 280 and 39045’, respectively. The flagpole is mounted
on the front of the library’s roof. Find the length of the flag pole.

5. The angle of depression from the top of a building to a point on the ground is 32030’.
How far is the point on the ground from the top of the building if the building is 252 m
tall?

6. From the top of a building that overlooks an ocean, an observer watches a boat sailing
directly toward the building. If the observer is 100 feet above sea level and if the angle of
depression of the boat changes from 250 to 400 during the period of observation,
approximate the distance the boat travels.
