When we think of Social media….
Our thoughts typically go straight to the top names. Who uses at least 2
on this page?
But what we don’t know
Is how much is really out there!

➔ Old social networks die

➔ Popular networks stick around,


but are forced to evolve

➔ New networks seem to arrive


faster than we can even keep up
with
A quick look at how social media has
revolutionized our world...
Let’s take a look at some history...
1997:
-The birth year of Social Media (I was 4 years old!)
-SixDegrees.com was a website that allowed users to friend others,
and was based on the 6 degrees of separation concept

-Lasted from 1997-2001


As it turns out...

2000: Internet was everywhere

2003: The first social media surge


-This is when MySpace got its start. Although not as
popular today, some musicians still use it to promote their
music
-LinkedIn also started around this time, which is still a
huge professional network today
2004: TheFacebook.com 2006: Twitter
-TheFacebook was originally -The idea of “tweeting” was

“Social media today consists of thousands of


social media platforms, all serving the same –
but slightly different purpose. Of course, some
social media platforms are more popular than
others, but even the smaller ones get used by a
portion of the population because each one caters
to a very different type of person.”

to make an impact
Express opinions and
share ideas
Enables creativity and innovation
Let’s dive into to some of these social media
networks, and how they can be utilized in
classrooms today
But first, as an elementary teacher, I just had to share some
great non-digital ways people are using social media that I came
across...
