BE QUIET!
Curso IAS04
UNCOVER 3 Módulos (9, 10)
Communication is an important part of life, but there are times when silence is better than talking. Here are the top-three
places where not talking or talking quietly is appropriate.
Libraries Libraries are quiet places where people go to do research, study, and read. Some talking is allowed and
necessary in a library, but you should whisper and not shout or even use your normal “indoor voice.” If you are too loud, a
librarian may tell you to be quiet. Of course, many libraries have discussion groups and book clubs where it is OK to talk in a
louder voice, but these are usually in separate rooms and not where people expect it to be quiet.
Movie Theaters It can be extremely rude to talk during a movie. Moviegoer Sid Levin said that he didn’t even like it when
people whispered during a movie. “It can be really distracting,” he complained. “I want to watch the movie without hearing
anyone’s
conversation.” It’s also a good idea to turn off your phone during a movie. Even the sound when it’s on “vibrate” can annoy
other people.
Hospitals Many people are dealing with stress at hospitals. You should respect others and keep your conversations quiet.
Many hospitals don’t allow visitors to use phones in patients’ rooms. Dr. Patel explained that this is because the energy that
comes from cell phones can cause problems with hospital equipment. He also said, “It’s just polite.”
2. According to the article, are these things true for libraries, movie theaters, or
hospitals? Write L (libraries), MT (movie theaters), or H (hospitals). Sometimes
there is more than one correct answer.
1. Some have a rule that you can’t use cell phones.
2. It’s sometimes appropriate to talk quietly or whisper.
3. There are special rooms where you can talk more loudly.
4. You may bother other people if you talk loudly.
5. Having your phone on vibrate may bother people.
Writing (5 points)
1. Write an action plan about a goal you want to achieve this year. Use the questions to help you.
