About the Teacher

Prof.: Mr. Ferdie Tamayo

Ferdinand R. Tamayo was born in 1967, which makes him not quite old but not quite young,
either. While growing up in Papua New Guinea in the 1980’s, he completed Grade 12 in the
tough Australian New South Wales education system. This is very surprising because his
favorite subjects during those days were recess, lunch time, and home time.

He came home to the Philippines in 1987, and graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University
in 1991 with a BS Management degree. In 1998, he enrolled at the Bulacan State University to
take up Continuing Professional Teacher Education, followed by a Master of Arts degree in
Education which remains unfinished to this day because his favorite subjects are still recess,
lunch time, and home time. He did finish a 2-year Certificate in Computer Science in 2009, and
he is still at it, enrolled at the La Consolacion University Philippines trying to finish a Master in
Business Administration.

If he is still sane after all this, he wants to study philosophy. He professes to love philosophy,
particularly existentialism and the ethics. He applies both to his daily life, or so he says. In fact
he says a lot of things, most particularly while drinking a beer or two.

He has worked in a bank, where he found vast amounts of money that could never be his, so he
resigned. He has also worked in the family farm, where he literally did bring home the bacon;
but unfortunately, rural life was not for him. He began teaching in 1999, and continues to do so
to this day, not because he finds it fulfilling and enjoyable but because he thinks his students still
listen to him. Some of his students have moved on to greater things, which make him feel very
proud. See? They did listen!

He remains as handsome and as witty as ever; and grows more loveable with each passing
year. You can be sure that this is so because he wrote this little essay himself. He is married to
Madelene Santos, a BS Psychology graduate who takes no responsibility for his sanity. They
have a daughter, Faustene, a Psychology graduate from the Ateneo who won best thesis
because unlike her father, likes subjects other than recess, lunch time, and home time.
