Empower System Configurations


The Empower 2 Chromatography Manager supports the following configurations:
• Personal:
– Chromatographic system is connected to stand-alone, single-user computer
containing the Oracle 10g relational database and Empower 2 application
software.
• Workgroup:
– Operates just like an Enterprise configuration with the exception of having a
capacity to connect up to a maximum of four concurrent client connections.
– Provides Enterprise capabilities in a small laboratory setting.
• Enterprise:
– Corporate-wide networked clients operating in a true multi-user
environment.
– Configuration supports an unlimited number of clients.
– Clients access a centralized database.

‹A relational database is a database in which the
data may change but the overall structure stays
constant
 Provides information storage and retrieval according to
the relationships you design
 Includes the ability to recover from failed or aborted
transactions
 Stores and retrieves information according to the

Empower 2 Terms
z A method is an instruction to Empower to
perform a task. There are several types of
methods in the application.
z An instrument method contains instructions to
control chromatographic instruments and
collect data.
z A processing method contains instructions to
identify peaks, to apply components names,
to integrate, to perform system suitability and
so on.

z A report method contains instruction to
display chromatograms, calibration curves,
numerical data and so on.
z A method set is a collection of methods that
must contain the instrument method.
‹ May also contain a processing method, a report
method, and an export method.

z A sample set method is a set of instructions
that defines what sample will be run and how.
‹ Information includes vial position, sample name,
injection volume and so forth.
z A sample set is a set of data created after
running a sample set method.
‹ Itcontains individual injections and specific
collected channels.

z A project is a user defined collection of
methods, results, view filters, custom fields
and raw data.
‹ Projecttablespace is allowed space within the
database for methods, results, view filters and
custom fields.
‹ A separate directory stores the raw data files.
z An Empower node is any node in a
workgroup or Enterprise environment like
clients, LAC/E’s, Acquisition Clients, and
Servers.

Getting Started
Before starting Empower 2:
1. Start up the chromatographic instruments.
2. Power on any printers or peripherals.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Wait until all the chromatographic instruments are in their “idle” states.

To start the Empower software, click Empower2.

Note: To rename the shortcut icon to Empower 2, right-click the icon and select
Rename.

Getting Started - Logging In


The login dialog opens.
• Click inside the User Name text box and enter a valid user name.
– For this training, the user name is Student.
• Click inside the Password text box and enter a valid password.
– For this training, the password is Student.
• User Name and Password are not case sensitive.
If you are logging in to a client computer in a Workgroup or Enterprise
configuration, a third field in the Login dialog is available to select which database
you want to access.

Note: The first time you log in to Empower your password is the same as your
username, unless it was changed by your System Administrator.

The first time you log in to Empower with a new username, you must change your
password.
• Enter your new password in the New Password text box.
• Use the tab key to move the cursor to the Confirm Password text box.
• Re-enter your new password.
The software pauses as the Oracle database and the Message Center load.
• Notice the Empower icon in the task bar for the Empower login window and the
blue letter E icon for Message Center in the Windows System tray.
• After you change the password the Select User Type and Interface window
opens. You can change the interface or user type.
Note: To change your password, refer to Chapter 2.

The Message Center


When a user logs on to Empower, the Message Center launches and minimizes to an
icon (shown as the blue letter “E” in the Windows System tray).
Double-click the E in the Windows System tray to view the contents of the
Message Center.
The Message Center stores and displays three types of messages: informational,
warning, and error messages. You can view theses messages in five different
categories by selecting one of the five tabs at the bottom of the table. When
Empower logs a message, the blue letter E changes to a red letter E.
Note: Error messages in the Message Center appear in bold, red, italicized script.
• Select View> Properties to access the properties of the Message Center.

Properties of the Message Center


The General Tab
Use this tab to control how many messages are displayed in the Message Center.
The Default value is 1,000,000,000.
The Purge Tab
Use this tab to purge specific categories of messages from the Message Center table.
• You can choose to immediately purge messages for selected categories, or you
can instruct Empower to automatically purge selected messages once they
become older than a predefined number of days.
Warning: Messages are permanently purged; they cannot be retrieved. Messages
must be saved as a file or printed before being purged to maintain a retrievable
record.
The Passwords Tab
Use this tab to password protect the properties of the Message Center.
Note: In a Workgroup or Enterprise set-up, the Message Center Properties can be
set once for all Empower Nodes like clients, LAC/E’s etc.

Help
Help Button – Opens the Empower Online Information System. You can access
and use help in several ways:
Empower Window Level Help – Press F1 or select Help On if there is a Help pull-
down menu.
Empower Online Information System – Access the Help menu and select
Empower Help Topics.
