Removal, Fitting

Coolant pump

Removal
1 Drain the cooling system. See booklet
02:01-01, section Coolant draining.
2 Tilt the cab.
3 Remove the coolant hose and the fan ring
bracket. Release the belt tensioner and
remove the poly-V-belts. See booklet
01:00-04.
4 Remove the coolant pump.

Fitting
1 The sealing on the coolant pump must be
greased with paraffin oil before being fitted.

1 Spray in oil through impeller A. Try to

aim the oil towards the shaft.
2 Rotate the impeller 180°.
3 Spray oil also into the other hole.
4 Rotate the impeller a few turns to ensure
that the oil has reached around the entire
seal.
2 Fit the coolant pump.

IMPORTANT! Do not damage the gasket.

3 Refit the poly-V-belts. See booklet

01:00-04. Fit the fan ring bracket and the
coolant hose.
4 Tilt the cab back.
5 Fill with coolant. See booklet 02:01-01,
section Coolant filling.

Check, Pulley

Check
Clean all parts and check:
• That the sealing surface towards the engine
block is flat.
• That the bearing rotates easily and that balls
and races are not damaged.

2 Press the pulley squarely onto the shaft end.

Note: For 14 and 16 litre engine pumps,

mandrel 98 257 should sit between the pump
impeller centre and the surface of the press
bench when pressing on the pulley.

2 Remove the sealing with puller 587 516 and
587 518. Fit the pullers on the sealing. The
sealing will divide into two parts, the outer
part remaining in the coolant pump. The
outer ring is removed by heating around the
sealing with a hot air gun to get the Loctite
to release.

3 Bend up the edge of the outer ring with two

screwdrivers and remove the ring.

Note: Take care not to damage the pump

housing gasket surface.

Sealing ring

4 Apply a thin layer of Loctite 270 to the

sealing surface between the pump housing
and the sealing ring on 11, 12, 14 and
16 litre engines.
5 Fit a new sealing using mandrel 99 117.
99 117

02_0371
IMPORTANT! If you have an old tool 99 117
it must be modified to fit the new sealing. If the
sealing is fitted with a tool that has not been
modified, the sealing will break which will
result in leakage. Modify tool 99 117 as shown
in the picture to the right.

Note: It is very important that mandrel 99 117

is used. This tool is designed to provide the
spring holding the sealing ring with the correct
pre-tension.

IMPORTANT! The pump impeller must be

modified before fitting. Otherwise the sealing
will be damaged, which will result in leakage.

6 Using a lathe, enlarge the 30.7 mm groove

on the pump impeller. The new
measurement should be 33 mm. See
picture.

Increase the diameter from 30.7 mm to 33 mm

7 Press the pump impeller onto the shaft. Use

a cylindrical spacer with even and parallel
end surfaces. The spacer should be
20–30 mm high and 25–50 mm in
diameter. Position the spacer on the pump
impeller shaft surface. Measure the
distance between the spacer's upper surface
and the pump housing gasket surface.
Measurement A is obtained by reducing
the measured value by the spacer's length.
Distance A between the pump housing's Measuring measurement A
gasket surface and the pump impeller's
1 Spacer
shaft surface should be:
2 The pump housing gasket surface
• 13.3–13.7 mm for 11, 12, 14 and 3 Measurement A
16 litre engines.
• 9.35–9.75 mm for 9 litre engines.

Note: The position of the shaft in the pump

housing is not to be changed, as this would risk
the sealing ring changing position, which could
result in leakage.
