https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaSc9aAPvkM

The short film is about a malicious being that loiters in the girl’s closet and pests a Young Girl by the name of
Mackenzie by directing messages through the closet door. This being is recognized as “The Demon of the
Door” and is grounded off of the notorious Ghost Paper Challenge Ritual. The genre of the short film is horror.
The audience sense it is a horror because of the four micro aspects executed in the making of it. This has a
linear narrative as we have characters, a climax, and a setting of the girl vanishing and talking to the object in
the cupboard. This further has relations to Todorovs theory as the audience witness an equilibrium at the start
to state where we are and what’s occurring, then a disruption which was the teddy being put away, which
begins to speaking to a ghost. The climax is that she then vanishes when she steps in the storeroom. The target
audience of this film would be teenagers, as the majority teens like to watch scary movies as the powerful
emotions make individuals appreciate the movie more and the adrenaline rush from the movies make them
more pleasurable and more fascinating to watch rather than other genres which may be slightly boring.

Mise En Scene:

In the short film there were numerous props used to display off the terror and feeling of the girl through
affecting and writing on belongings, this comprises the teddy bear that she movies because her being scared of
it, this has been conveyed so that the audience can see that the girl is frightened by it and the use of moving
the prop illustrations that it is so troubling that she needs to remove it from her vision. This then results in it
vanishing when in the closet. This has been executed in the same way that the pen and paper have been as she
is too frightened to open the closet again, she then uses her pen and paper and then puts a statement to the
“ghost” In the wardrobe, the pen and paper have been displayed to signify that the “ghost” in the closet can
exchange with the individual and we can see it is dissimilar due to the writing used by it. It is messy and jotted
onto the paper, whereas the girls is messy as she is shaking in discomfort as the “ghost” in almost lettering in a
way to show that it is angry at the girl, as she tried to get away. The Interior lighting has also been conveyed to
portray that she is inside of her house/room; this has been put so that the audience can see that she is in an
ordinary environment of a room. This makes sure that the audience can understand that it is a “ghost”
lingering her in her room. Also the use of her knowing where that the teddy can go in the closet and that the
pen and paper were on the desks shows that it is her room, as she knows where everything goes and where
she puts stuff.
Sound:

Displaying the heavy breathing of the girl presents the girl is in a tense mood and to show that she is petrified,
this is diegetic sound that we can see on screen. This allows to build up the uncertainty of what is behind the
door as she is so scared that it is distressing her breathing. This has been conveyed because it emphasizes how
the girl is feeling which then touches us as an audience, because we then feel sorry for the girl, it also means
that we as a audience can have sort of understanding of the genre more as she is frightened so it conveys that
it is a horror film. The use the beating on the door at the end of the film, which then results into to complete
silence is also diegetic sound as we are seeing it on screen, when it then goes silent it portrays that something
has happened to the girl from the use of all melody and sounds vanishing. This is conveyed to signify that
something is happening to the girl and we can see that as when the closet opens up again and her not being in
the next scene.

Editing:

Editing has been conveyed in this short film to present the genre of horror by applying slow motion camera
shot and changeovers to encourage the tension and present the nearby area to generate an idea of what’s
going on. This has been presented so that the audience can have an idea that due to the stride of the video
that it is a horror, as the majority horror movies are slow paced until the climate (, ghost appearing, murder
etc.). In this short movie the camera pans very gradually when stirring to show the full room and area the girl is
in, it also helps us to sense her actions such as the handling of pen and paper and eliminating the teddy bear
from her sight. At the very start of the film to 0:22 there is a montage showing the door way to the room, the
teddy bear she get rids of, the alarm clock, and then the girl herself. This has been conveyed so that the
audience can see that scene will be shot in a room, that must be young as she still has a teddy, and then the
alarm clock is to signify the time and that it is late. This has most likely been used so that the genre can be
more explicit as most horror movies are set late and this is set around 3:33am which is when you’ll be sleeping
normally.

Cinematography:

In this short film there were numerous dissimilar uses of cinematography to display of the emotion of the girl
such as close ups, also applying other methods to present what she is staring at and what she is seeing,
through the use of over the shoulder shots and tilts done by the camera. Close ups were conveyed in the short
film to emulate how scared she was when writing to the ghost and when the closet is making a continuous
banging noise as she tries to run away, the close ups were displayed so that the audience can see the anxiety
in the girls eyes and so that it then makes us feel more absorbed into the genre as the dread in her eyes and
the look on her face displays that the genre is horror. Over the shoulder shots were conveyed so that we as an
audience can see what she is staring at, and doing, for example when she is looking down at the note at 3:28.
This presents that she is looking at the note and is frightened, we can see this from the use of her shaking
while looking and writing on this note. Shaking has been used to signify that it is a horror genre, as in most
horror movies the characters shake with fear and a sense of anxiety.
Ancestors (2018) Sci-Fi Short Film
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6my5xiKVPKs

This short film is about how humans have “tumble-down” earth, numerous centuries in the future, and an
traveler attends his family home world to find out what happened to all the humans on Earth; this is signified
continuously through the film with numerous shots of the earth looking lifeless and dry. The genre of the short
film is sci fi, the audience can tell it is a sci fi because of the four micro aspects used in the creation of it and
the different conventions perused to present the genre of it. The target audience of this short film would be
again teens and younger teens, as the entire topic of space interests some people and it assistances people to
get interested in a certain topic, such as science. People who watch sci fi movies are often interested in space
and theories of space, the short film also fits in with Todorov theory as there was a disruption to the
equilibrium, when he found the bone in the ground, and the effort of mending the destruction was when he
put the bone back into the ground as it tailored to a 36 month old girl.

Cinematography:

There is a Varity of wide shots used in this short film in order to present us as an audience that the
environment is dying due to human effects. The film is about how the Ancestors tumble-down earth; we can
understand that they have by the use of long shots to display the dead ground, and trees. Also by making a
“dust and sand” storm this illustrations that the effect humans had on the earth was massive. This makes the
audience feel sympathy for the man, as he has come to see earth for himself and instead of seeing the amazing
planet he was expecting he got a dried up dying one instead. We can see his emotion towards this as close ups
were used in many ways such as, his video logs and when he is wondering the ground.
Sound:

Sound has been perused in this short film to produce the genre of sci fi by using non-diegetic sound, such as
the voice over added in to the movie over the actions he is performing, also the sounds of the wind blowing.
The environment has been used to help us as an audience that the earth is “dead” as the sound of him walking
on all the dead grass and leaves shows that the earth is dry sand lifeless thanks to its “ancestors”. The
narrative of the film is linear as it shows one point in time but the actual video itself is non-linear as the shots
are moved about to different locations to prove the point of what he is speaking about. Such as the whole
speaking about earth, but the video shows us different areas like the bones and location is different compared
to what the narrative is saying.

Mise-En-scene:

There were many uses of props in this film such as, the ship and the gadgets on the ship, the use of these
props help us to see that the genre is sci fi, as they are space tech and on a space ship, which links to the genre
of sci fi. This has been used so that we as an audience can see the genre and understand that the film is a sci fi
based film, we know this due to all the conventions used. Also the use of his spaced suit helps us see this as
normally people wouldn’t wear a suit to travel in but you need one in space for the space ship to make you
safe, so the use of costume helps us see that it is an entertaining Sci Fi film.
Editing:

Editing has been used in this short film by using lots of cuts to show what the voice over is talking about, such
as when he is talking about the ship he is on it cuts to show that he is flying a ship, this links to the convention
of the genre as the ship shows us it is a sci fi genre. The use of editing in a fake “dust and sand” storm, helps us
to under and that the earth is dying as the conditions on the planet have changed to storms or sand and dust.
This helps us understand the genre again as sand storms are normally in sci fi films as they bring the effect of a
change in climate that has effect the planet and universe.

“Mop” Comedy Short Film

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xhn6AnCOtMI

This small movie is about a night cleaner, who unintentionally slays an office worker; he must hide the body
without being seen by someone. The genre of the short film is comedy we can tell it is a comedy due to the
four micro aspects used in the making of it. This clip begins with a montage of the city, which helps the
audience understand were it is set, which is in the city. The film presents Todorov theory, as this has a an
equilibrium that disrupts the usual every day which is the death of the agent, from slipping over the wet floor,
it then is resolved as he gets rid of the body, and then comes back to the scene to find a new equilibrium (a
new dead agent). The first reason why people watch comedy movies is because they want to be entertained.
People like to be entertained because they want to relax and try to escape from reality, so due to this the
target audience for this film would be young teens and older teens as most teens have a stressful school day
and watching a comedy would make them feel better due to the effects of the film making them laugh, this
will change the mood significantly.
Editing:

This clip begins with a montage of the city, which helps show the audience were it is set, which is in the city.
Through the use of faced paced clips and the montage, it is conventional to the genre of comedy as comedy’s
pace is faster than other genres as it is to show off a funny element of the clip. We also then have an
establishing shot to show us the corridor it is set in and the worker himself. The use of the pace varies
throughout the video, as at the start it shows fast-pasted clips to establish where it is set and to show the
genre and then throughout the clip there are slow paced moments, like when the agent feel and died we had a
close up of his face and then a slow paced camera movement to show us what he is thinking. The used of cuts
in the video from different angles helps us to see the struggle he goes through to move the body. This has
been used so that the audience can see that he is trying hard to hide it and the cuts are conventional to the
genre as the multiple cuts shows us his struggle of picking up his body, we can see this as 0:53 in the video.

Mise-en-scene:

Throughout the first 30 seconds we can see the use of iconography in the clip such as the mop, which ends up
being a murder weapon as a agent slips over the wet floor and dies, the use of the mop being used as the
“murder weapon” helps us to understand that it is a comedy, mostly because a mop isn’t a dangerous weapon
it is just used to clean the floor, so the use of it as the “weapon” shows off a funny side to it. This makes the
audience amused by the fact that he mops the floor and before he can put down the wet sign, signs someone
falls over it and dies. As it wasn’t put out he then gets rid of the body to come back and find another body, this
meets the genre of comedy as he didn’t get the sign out onto the wet floor which resulted in someone dying,
we can see he is confused and then panicked as he tries to remove the body. The use of the iconography helps
show us as an audience that the genre is comedy
Sound:

The film is full of diegetic sound, such as the gliding over onto the floor and the dragging of the body and then
the struggle of the man trying to hide it all. These are sounds that are all due to the environment he is in; the
sound of the body being dragged to the elevator is sounds that are already there due to the friction against the
floor and the buttons of the elevator. The use of this helps making it funny, as there is no dialogue it is all facial
expression and environmental sounds such as the panic on his face but the dragging of his body.

Cinematography:

In this short film there were many different uses of cinematography to show of the emotion of the worker
such as close ups, and bird eye view shots to show off a different angle of the event, this also brings a funny
element to it as we see the body from above and then it being dragged away from the screen in a struggle, this
makes it funny as we see the body from above slowly get dragged off the screen. This makes the audience
believe that the man is really dead, as the lifeless body is dragged from the screen. Close up shorts were used
so that we as an audience can see the emotion and facial features of the working as he has accidently
committed a murder. The close ups have been used as we need to see his expressions and dialogue isn’t used
in this short movie it is more just facial expressions and sounds. This has been used to make it meet its
conventions of the genre as it helps bring a funny element to it, as it has no dialogue. The high angle shot was
used in a way to make the scene more dramatic as we are looking down on the two characters, this is effective
as High-angle shots can make the subject seem vulnerable or powerless, which he is as it is the dead body of
an agent being dragged away.
