WATER – FLOWING WISDOM

A World Water Day 2018 Event

25 th WWD
• WWD2018 - theme, ‘Nature for Water’ & explores nature-based
solutions.
• Nature-based solutions - potential to solve many water challenges.
• Harmonise ‘Green Infra’ with ‘Grey Infra’ where ever possible.
• I have taken the liberty to put this Surat event on the global map via
the UN website: http://worldwaterday.org/events-map/
INDIA SCENARIO
• Total annual precipitation 4000 cubic km
• Annual Monsoon Rainfall 3000 cubic km
• Annual utilisable surface water 1100 cubic km
• Annual ground water recharge potential 342 cubic km

• 1100 cubic km = 880 cubic meter/Yr/head

PER CAPITA ANNUAL WATER RESOURCE
[AWR]
• AWR of a country and water stress.
• AWR>1700 cum/head - Rare possibility of shortages.
• 1000 < AWR < 1700 cum/head – Water stressed
• 500 < AWR < 1000 cum/head - Water scarce.
• AWR < 500 cum/head - Water is primary constraint to life.

• Rising population => Increased agriculture => Increased

irrigation demand.
• Today 74% of usable water is consumed in irrigation.
CONSTRAINTS
• Estimated only about 37 per cent of the surface
water resources can actually be mobilized.
• 90 per cent of the annual flow occurs in monsoon.
• Limited suitable storage reservoir sites. Add to that
quintessential politics in India.
• Unregulated extraction of ground water – all purposes.
• Un-checked pollution and loss of lakes – Policy issues.
HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE
• ENGINEERS & PLANNERS
• Apartments > 50% housing in urban areas.
• In metros the domestic water demand, in MI & HI areas > 200 LPCD
• A significant part of this demand is preventable wasteful use of treated
water.
• Common unbilled use is no incentive for conservation.
• Can we not plan water plumbing with flat wise metering ?
• A meter installed adjacent to the door of each flat, in transparent
enclosure - showing consumption.
• Girdle drain around property, for collection and harvest /
recharge.
DANGERS OF POLLUTION & LOSS OF LAKES
BELANDUR LAKE - BANGALORE

Villains
Soap, industrial waste, trapped methane release.
Individual use & conservation
• Stop that leak ! = 20 – 30 Lits/day/leak
• Don’t let the tap run free – ever !
• Bath tub – fill only 1/3rd. You will fill the 2/3rd ! = -60% [150-200 Lit]
• Wash full loads in washing machines, even those that claim to use just the
required water. = - 30%
• Wash vegetables in a pan – not under flowing tap water = -80%
• Wet and swipe/wipe floors, don’t wash them out. = -10 Lit/10 sqm
• Water trees/plants in the evening – saturates root zone, reduces evaporation,
lasts next full day, promotes root zone aeration.
• Girdle drain around property, for collection and harvest / recharge.
FUTURE
• Recycling for zero discharge – Industries, urban colonies.
• Waste water to potable water.
• Educate for consumption of recycled water.
• Water wars:
• TN vs KA vs KL
• Future scenario: Entitlement of precipitation, what falls on your
ground is yours hence trap, store, use, recycle and conserve.
• Atmosphere the new source which renews naturally and
won't be fought over.
• Sea water - only for coastline. Uneconomical to convey.
WE ARE ALL EQUALLY AFFECTED !

LETS STAND TOGETHER & SUSTAIN !!
