Lesson Distinguishing text-types
1 according to purpose and
features: classification

After you go through this lesson, you are expected to:

1. distinguish text-types according to purpose and features: classification.

What’s In

Text type is a way of classifying and defining different language interaction spoken and
written. It refers to the purpose of the text and the way it is written.

What’s New

Classification Text is a text type when the text or paragraph has organized ideas by groups
or types. They describe them for the reader to see comparisons and contrast among the objects.

Matter
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. The three states of matter
are solid, liquid, and gas. Solid has a definite shape and volume like rock, notebook and
table. Liquid has a definite volume, but take the shape of the container like milk, oil, and
water. Gas has no definite shape or volume like air and oxygen. Matter can be classified
according to physical and chemical properties.

What Is It

DIRECTIONS: Read the paragraphs and classify it by how the spider gets its food, web, and habitat
using the table.

Spider
The most common spider is the garden spider. This spider builds its orb web
hanging from twigs and leaves. To hunt for food, it stays very still in the middle of the
web waiting for a prey. As soon as a fly gets trapped into the web, the spider, feeling
the vibration, moves to catch the food.

The water spider lives in ponds underwater. Its web is bell-shaped. To catch
water bugs, it traps food in a bubble of air. Water spiders use silk to house their eggs
under water. They are found in swamps, marshes, creeks, and ponds.

What’s More

DIRECTIONS: Read the paragraphs and classify the characteristics of each organism.

Energy and nutrients are transferred from organisms to organisms through their
feeding relationships. Producers are green plants, algae or microorganisms that are
capable of making their own food. They make their own food by converting the energy
from the sun into chemical energy. Producers provide energy and nutrients to other
organisms.
Consumer get their energy by feeding on plants and other organisms. Therefore,
all animals are consumers. Organisms that eat only plants are herbivores. Living things
that eat other animals are called carnivores. Some animals which eat both plants and
animals are omnivores.

What I Have Learned
I have learned that:
Text classification also known as text tagging or text categorization is the process
of categorizing text into organized groups. By using natural language processing,
text classifiers can automatically analyze texts and then assign a set of predefined
tags or categories based on its contents.

What I Can Do

DIRECTIONS: Read the paragraph and fill in the diagram below.

Animals are born in different ways. Some animals are egg-laying while some are
born alive. Animals which lay eggs to the environment are birds, snakes, frogs, turtles,
lizards, and insects while animals which undergo gestation are born alive. Cats, cows,
dogs, and whales are animals which are born alive.
Excerpt from National Geographic

Assessment

DIRECTIONS: Complete the graphic organizer to classify the types of plants and their
characteristics.

Plants have different types according to lifespan: annual, biennial, and

perennial. Annual are seasonal flowering plants. Biennial takes two years to grow while
perennials are those that last longer.

Additional Activities

DIRECTIONS: Read the paragraph and classify the three basic types of rocks.

A rock is a natural substance composed of soiled crystals of different materials

that have been fused together into solid lump. There are three basic types of rock:
igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

After you go through this lesson, you are expected to:

1. distinguish text-types according to purpose and features: explanation.

What’s In

Explanation is a text-type usually includes a series of event explaining how and why a

certain event or phenomenon occurs.

What’s New

Read this explanation and complete the prompt.

Planting Rice

Planting rice is not an easy work to do. The farmers have to plow, harrow, and
level the land first. They have to prepare the seedbed and wait for the seedlings to
grow. Transplanting the seedlings adds to the back bending work. Then the farmers
have to visit the field, fertilize the plants, and remove weeds and pests after planting.
Before rice gets on the table, palay grains will still have to be dried and threshed.

egg, the larva (caterpillar), the pupa (chrysalis), and the adult butterfly. Each of the
four stages are very unique to individual species of butterflies which is part of what
makes watching and raising butterflies so much fun. Butterflies are not only beautiful
creatures but do a great deal for the environment. They are plant pollinators. They
also serve as sustenance for other species.

What I Have Learned

Explanation is a text-type that explains a process on how and why things or events

work or happen. Its purpose is to explain in details and logically describe stages and process.

It explains how things or events happens through a sequence of events and also provides

reasons for a process.

What I Can Do

DIRECTIONS: Underline the function of forest.

Forest is very useful. They supply lumber which is used for building

houses, stones, offices and other buildings. Some forest trees give

materials for making pulp, paper, wall board, furniture, rattan, gum and

fire wood. Medicinal plants are also taken from forests.

14
Assessment

DIRECTIONS: Distinguish text-type according to purpose and feature by giving explanation

to the question.

The building of gases in the earth’s atmosphere causes the greenhouse effect.
With so many gases in the atmosphere, earth becomes like a greenhouse because the
heat from the surface cannot easily escape into the outer space. Because of the gases
that block the heat from escaping to the outer space, there is global warming, thus,
the temperature of the Earth rises. Some of the effects of global warming are an
increase in sea level, droughts, storms, extinction of animals, loss of coral reef and
increase in temperature.

Additional Activities

DIRECTIONS: Read the explanation text - type and answer the questions that follow.

The amount of water on Earth remains constant. But its form is always changing,

from solid to liquid, from liquid to gas, and back again. It moves in a pattern called

water cycle. Heat from the sun causes water in oceans, lakes and rivers to evaporate

into vapor. Further, vapor is given off by plants and animals.

Lesson Distinguishing text-types
3 according to purpose and
features: enumeration

After you go through this lesson, you are expected to:

1. distinguish text-types according to purpose and features: enumeration.

What’s In

Enumeration is a type of text that has a listing of important points on the text. It focuses

on listing facts, characteristics or features. It uses signal words like, first of all, secondly, then, in

fact, for example, several, numerous, first, next, finally, also, for instance, in addition and etc.

What’s New

Read the text. Note how the ideas are being organized. Answer the questions below.

The Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram shows three very different types of stars. The first
type is called the Main Sequence which includes the sun. These stars are fueled by
nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium. The hotter they are, the bigger they
become. They last for about five billion years. The second type includes the super
giants. As they reach old age, they deplete their hydrogen supply. Their core contracts
as their outer layers expand.
Eventually, they will explode becoming nebula or supernova, then white dwarfs,
neutron stars, or black holes. Third, smaller stars consequently become white dwarfs,
shrinking, and depleting their nuclear fuels, finally becoming cold, dark, black dwarfs.

What’s More

DIRECTIONS: Read the text and enumerate the things that we need to do/prepare for

the coming of typhoon.

Whole year-round typhoons occur. It is always good to prepare for the coming
of any typhoon as predicted. First, and foremost, inspect your house, if necessary,
repair or fixing is needed. With this, cleaning up the house drainage system is a must to
avoid clogging up.
Next, store an adequate supply of food and water good for a few days
everything in the house should be put in an elevated position, especially those items
that generate electricity. Water should not penetrate them in case floodwater rushes
into your house. Lastly, always keep flashlights, candles, batteries and first aid supplies.

What I Have Learned

• An enumeration paragraph or text lists the kinds, characters, classes, types,

parts, ways, and groups of a thing or subject.

• When enumerating paragraph, we might group together several

individual objects which appear to be unlike but have some principle in

common.

What I Can Do

DIRECTIONS: Read the text and enumerate the processes of how is the surface of the

Earth constantly changing using the graphic organizer.

The earth’s surface is constantly changing through slow processes

that we don’t usually see. One is erosion. This has worn away rocks and
mountains over millions of years, caused by air, water, and wind. Another
change is cause by earthquakes that originate deep inside the planet.
More sudden and violent than erosion, an earthquake results when
strains between Earth’s plates produce shock waves. And the third
process is called lava, escapes onto surface through gaps on the crust.
What we experience is volcanic eruption.

Assessment

DIRECTIONS: Read the text and enumerate the ways of how Emanuel is

described as self-motivated and self-directed.

As a grade five pupil, Emanuel was already self-motivated and self-

directed in many ways. He would assist his mother in some household
chores and some errands. On days when there would be no classes, he
would go to his father in the farm and would pasture the carabao to the
fields. On weekdays, he would burn the midnight oil, working on his
assignments and studying his lessons.
