What’s New?

Africa
David Diop

Africa my Africa
Africa of proud warriors in ancestral savannahs
Africa of whom my grandmother sings
On the banks of the distant river
I have never known you
But your blood flows in my veins
Your beautiful black blood that irrigates the fields
The blood of your sweat
The sweat of your work
The work of your slavery
Africa, tell me Africa
Is this your back that is unbent
This back that never breaks under the weight of humiliation
This back trembling with red scars
And saying no to the whip under the midday sun
But a grave voice answers me
Impetuous child that tree, young and strong
That tree over there
Splendidly alone amidst white and faded flowers
That is your Africa springing up anew
springing up patiently, obstinately
Whose fruit bit by bit acquires
The bitter taste of liberty.

Processing Questions:

1. What is Africa poem all about?

GUIDE QUESTIONS (ACTIVITY #1)

1. What makes poetry different from prose?
2. How can literature mirror the culture of people with diverse background?

ABSTRACTION
Literature is any written work that are considered to have a long-lasting impact or
importance as it expresses permanent concepts. This can either be within of the
style of poetry or prose.

Poetry is an art that is written or spoken in beating composition. The purpose of

poetry is to entertain by making stunning or originative thought. Some poetry is
written in verse. There are many different types and formats for poetry varying by
lines, repetition and rhyming. Two popular subjects often used in poetry are nature
and feeling.

Divisions and Types of Poetry

a story following order to be sung to the elements loosely related to
of events accompaniment of a drama because it is written
musical instrument in a dramatic form

Examples: Examples: Examples:

Elegy
Ode

6
Prose, on the other hand is verbal or written language that follows the natural flow
of speech. It is the most common form of writing, used in both fiction and non-
fiction. Prose comes from the Latin “prosa oratio,” meaning “straightforward.” In
subject matter, prose generally concentrates on the familiar and ordinary but may
also deal with subjects such as heroism, beauty, love, and nobility of spirit.

Division and Types of Prose

facts which illustrates truths about human on fact rather than on the imagination,
life. although they may contain fictional
elements.
Examples: Examples:
Short Story Formal Essay
The Novel Informal or Familiar Essay
Other forms of Essay ( critical essay,
biographical essay, essay of travel)

Have you ever finished reading a completely unique novel or short story and
thought: 'What did the author mean?' Or you might ask yourself: 'Why did the author
write this?' It's natural for us to ask these queries once we read. Part of the reading
methodology is to make connections to the writing, which implies you pay time
decoding it. What will it mean to interpret literature? Once you interpret literature,
you're attempting to hunt out the meaning and significance of the story. You're
asking yourself each what the text means and why it is important.

One of the simplest ways in which to interpret a writing is to use the text as a
guide. When you use the text as a guide, you are examining the foremost part of the
story and seeing how they relate to each other to find the meaning and importance of
the story.

Moreover, to fully perceive literary works’ meaning, one must not forget that
literature has something to do with society-its culture, diversity, and heritage.
Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people,
encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. "Culture
encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage,
music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet
visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things," Cristina De
Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, told Live
Science.
In addition, cultural diversity helps us recognize and respect “ways of being”
that are not necessarily our own, so that as we interact with others we can build
bridges to trust, respect, and understanding across cultures. Furthermore, this

7
diversity makes our country a more interesting place to live, as people from diverse
cultures contribute language skills, new ways of thinking, new knowledge, and
different experiences.

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we
pass on to future generations.

Having acquired all these, we conclude that literature reflects society, its good
values, and its ills.

Task 3: Reflect

What have you realized as you journey through this lesson? Before moving
forward, reflect on the important points you found helpful and challenging by
completing the sentences. Write your answer on a separate sheet.
