Academic writing refers to forms of prose used by students, faculty, and

researchers to convey a body of information about a particular subject. At some
extent, it is formal, complex, explicit, and responsible. It uses language precisely
and accurately.

It has its own set of rules and practices. These rules and practices may be
organized around formal structure that ensure ideas are supported by author
supported by author citations in the literature. It deals with the underlying
theories and causes governing processes and practices in everyday life, as well
as exploring alternative explanations for these events. It follows a particular tone
and adheres to traditional conventions on punctuation, grammar, and spelling.

FEATURES OF ACADEMIC WRITING

1. It has a structure, such as beginning, middle, and end.

2. It is relatively formal. It avoids colloquial words and expressions.

3. Facts and figures are provided precisely.

4. It is objective and not personal. It has fewer words that refer to the writer
or the reader. The main emphasis is on the information that the writer

3
wants to give. It uses nouns (and adjectives), rather than verbs (and
adverbs).

5. It uses vocabulary accurately.

6. It provides evidence and justifications for any claims a writer makes. The
writer is responsible for demonstrating an understanding of any source.

7. It makes use of citations and referencing of published authors.

8. It has its own tone, which dictates the choice of words and phrases.

9. It targets a more general audience. Readers are usually intelligent people

but may not be specifically informed of the topic.

10. It always follows rules of punctuations and grammar.

TYPES OF ACADEMIC WRITING

1. Descriptive – It provides facts or information. An example would be a
summary of an article or a report of the results of an experiment.

2. Analytical - It requires reorganization of facts and information that are

described into categories, groups, parts, types, or relationships.

3. Persuasive - It includes arguments, recommendations, interpretations of

findings, or evaluation of the work of others. The claims one makes need
to be supported by some evidence.

4. Critical - It includes a critique of a journal article, or a literature review

that identifies the strengths and weaknesses of existing research.

ACADEMIC WRITING PROCESS

1. Pre-writing - This includes choosing the topic, generating ideas for the
topic, and focusing on central ideas.

2. Organizing - This includes making an outline that can help in organizing

the ideas and information. This makes the process of writing much easier.

3. Writing the first draft - This includes writing the rough draft to develop
and support the information on the outline.

4. Revising and editing - This part is one of the best ways to improve the
academic writing process. This is where the revising and editing happens
like spelling, grammar, and punctuation marks.

5. Finalizing - This is the last step where the writer finalizes the entire
academic paper from the biggest down to the smallest details including the
format and specificities like the spacing, margins, and font size.

students. (excerpt from Why Should Students Eat Breakfast Everyday –

2. As for its behavior, like any good mantis, it is an ambush predator. It takes
full advantage of its unique appearance, settling amongst the petals of
orchids and awaiting visiting insects. It favors butterflies and moths for its
meals but will happily take any insect on offer. Indeed, it need not even be
an insect: particularly voracious orchid mantises have been known to feed
on small lizards, frogs, mice and even birds. (excerpt from On Hymonepus
Coronatus – by Matt Salter) ____________________________

3. According to the feedback forms, the children appeared to enjoy the lesson,
with 90% rating as fun and enjoyable. Some more able students managed
to get through the work quickly and started disturbing others in their
group. According to Petty (2004), it is important to have differentiated
activities to ensure all students learn at their own pace and are suitably
challenged. (excerpt from Study advice at the University of Reading)

4. Is the ability to read and write more important today than in the past?
Everyone has his answer depending on his experience and lifestyle. Some
people think it is true because people need not read and write in the past.
On the contrary, other people believe there is not a big difference between

5
today and yesterday. As far as I am concerned, I would like to say that
reading and writing are getting more important for our life day by day. In
the following discussion, I will provide some reasons and examples to
support my viewpoints. (excerpt from The Importance of Reading and Writing
