Chapter 8: Electrical Resistance

1 a State the equation that links power, current and voltage.

b A 10 W tablet computer is connected to the 230 V mains. Calculate the current flowing
through the tablet.

c Calculate the resistance of the tablet.

2 A teacher is testing resistors before an electricity lesson. He builds the circuit below.

a State the equation that links voltage, current and resistance.

b Calculate the current in the circuit.

c The teacher now replaces the 8 Ω resistor with an unknown resistor. He adds an ammeter into
the circuit. Mark on the diagram a suitable place for where the ammeter could go.

d The ammeter shows a reading of 1.5 A. Calculate the resistance of the new resistor.

3 A student is asked to investigate the I–V characteristics of a resistor. She is provided with the
following equipment: a variable resistor, connecting leads, a power supply, an ammeter, a
voltmeter and a switch.

a Draw a circuit diagram for this investigation including all of the equipment listed above.

b Write a method for this investigation. It should include what measurements will be taken, any
safety precautions and what the results may look like.
