1.2 i i Advantages iof iUsing iE-wallet

According ito iDave i(2016), ithe iease iof iconducting ifinancial itransactions
iprobably ithe ibiggest imotivator ito igo idigital. iUsers iwill ino ilonger ineed ito icarry

iwads i of i cash, i plastic i cards, i or i even i queue i up i for i ATM i withdrawals. i It’s i also

ia isafer iand ieasier ispending ioption iwhen itraveling, ifor iexample, iusers ihave ito

ifreedom i to i transact i whenever i and i wherever i possible. i Apart i from i that, i users

ican i experience i convenience i by i using i an ie-wallet. i Users i can iget i through i a

ipurchase iin imere iseconds iwith ia isimple itap ior iscan iof itheir imobile idevice

i(Rathore, i 2016). i The i experience i of i purchasing i items i becomes i quicker

i and easier-leading ito ia igreater isense iof isatisfaction. iFurthermore, ipersonal

idetails iare isafe ion ithe ie-wallet ias iwell iall ipersonal iaccount iinformation iis

iencrypted i(Madan i & i Yadav, i 2016). i This i means i that i the i actual i account

i number i isn’t
stored ion ia ismartphone, ievery itime ineeds ia iverification idetail iif iwish ito iview ior
ichange iaccount iinformation. iThis iis isafe ithan iwalking iaround iwith icash iand

i credit i cards. iEven i though, i e-wallets i have i advantages i it i also i has

idisadvantages i such i as i the i higher i risk iof i identity i theft. i Besides, i there i is i a

ichance iconsumer iwill ido ioverspending i by iusing i an ie-wallet. iHowever, iit

idepends ion ihow iconsumer iuse ie-wallets.

1.3 i i Statement iof iThe iProblem

The itraditional iways iof imaking iand ireceiving ipayments isuch ias idoing
ishopping, ipaying ibills iare ichanging ito i digital iwallets ipayments. iCurrent iyoung

igeneration iwants ieverything ito ibe idone ifast. iThis igeneration ihas igrown iup iin ia

iworld iwith itechnology, iconnected iwith isocial imedia inetworks iusing itheir

ismartphones iand itablets. iE-wallet i adoption iin iMalaysia iis istill iat i its iinfancy. i

iAccording i i to i ithe i i NIELSEN i iNEWSLETTER i i (2019), i while i 67% i of

iMalaysians iuse isome iform iof icashless ipayment i(with ia idebit i card iand ionline

ibanking ibeing ithe iprimary imethod, iat i63% iand i57% irespectively), ia imere i8% iof

i the i population i uses imobile i wallets i as ia i means i of i payment. i Also, i though i a ilot

i of i research i work ihas i been i conducted i on i the i use i of i mobile i wallet i little iamount

iof iresearch ihas ibeen idone ion ithe isame iwith istudents ias i the irespondents

ispecially iin iPoliteknik iPort iDickson. i This i research i study i is i a ihumble i attempt

i in ithis i direction i to iknow ithe iadoption iof istudents itowards imobile iwallets.

1.4 i i Research iObjectives

The imajor ipurpose iof ithis iresearch ito:
a) i To iunderstand ithe icurrent iadoption iof ie-wallet iamong istudents.
b) i To i i determine i i factors i i influencing i i the i i adoption i i of i i e-wallet i i among
istudents.

c) i i To idetermine ithe ibenefits, iobtained iby ithe iadoption iof iusing ian ie-wallet.

2 i i i Literature iReview
Technology i advancement i has i helped i to i proper i the i adoption i of i e-wallet.
There iis ia ilot iof ilogical ithought itowards ie-wallet iadoption iamong iyoung ipeople.

2.1 i i Adoption iof iE Wallet

A iFew iyears iback ithe iidea iof ithe idigital iwallet ihas ibeen iinitiated, istarting
iwith iswitching ifrom iusing ibanknotes ito iaccepting idebit iand icredit icards,

ifollowed i by i forming i cashless i payment i method i by i e-wallet. i This i technology

has ibeen iadded ito imobile iphones iwhere ithe iuser ican isecurely isave iall ithe
ifinancial iinformation iin ithe idigital iwallet iwhich ican ibe iused ilater i(Alaeddin iet

ial., i2018). iBased ion ithe irecent idata ifrom i Bank iNegara i Malaysia i(2018),

iMalaysia icurrently ilags ibehind iregional iplayers iin iterms iof ilow iadoption

icompared i to i China i and i India. i However, i the i launch i of iInteroperable i Credit

iTransfer iFramework i (ICTF) iby iBank iNegara iMalaysia iis iexpected ito iimprove

ithe iadoption iof ie-wallets iin iMalaysia. iThe ie-wallet imarket iis ipoised ifor istrong

igrowth iand icould isupport ifuture ifunctions isuch ias iremittance, ie-payments

iand ishare iQR icodes.

In i the i global i context, i the i acceptance i of i digital i and i technology i is i raised

among iyouth iand iyoung iadult. iTwo ithirds i(64%) iof i18-25-year-olds iin ithe iUK
now i use i a i mobile i wallet, i according i to i research i released i by i social
i money
transfer iapp iMoneymailme. iThe iresearch ireveals ithat i48% iof i18-25 iyear iolds
ibelieve ithat iphysical imoney iwill ibe iobsolete iwithin i20 iyears, iwhile imore ithan ia

i third i (38%) i say i that i we i will i no i longer i need i it i in i 15 i years. i Less i than i three iin

i ten i (28%) i say i that i they i don’t i think icash iwill i ever i stop ibeing i used i or iproduced

i(Finance iMonthly, i2017).

2.2 i i Social iInfluence

Social iinfluence ihappens iwhen ithe iconsumer’s ibehavior iis iinfluenced iby
others isuch ias ifrom ipeers, ifamily iand imedia iaffect iindividual iin ia idecision ito
iadopt ie-wallet. iAccording ito i Mun, iKhalid, i& iNadarajah i (2017), ithe ipressure iof

ia isocial isystem iis ione iof ifactor iinfluenced iin ithe iadoption iof ie-wallet iamong ithe

iyoung igeneration. iIn iMalaysia, ithe isocial iinfluence imight ibe iimpacted ithe

iconsumers’ idesire ito iuse ie-wallet ias ithe iconsumers itend ito iseek i an iopinion

ifrom itheir ifamilies iand ifriends iregarding ie-wallet iexperience. i Apart ifrom ithat,

iwhen iconsumers icome iacross ia inew itechnology isystem, ithey imay ifeel icertain

iuncertainty iregarding ithe isystem iand ithe iresult iof iits iuse.

2.3 i i Perceived ieasy ito iuse

The i biggest i motivator i to i go i digital i is i the i ease i of i conducting i financial
transactions. i One i of i the i major i factors i concerning i consumers’ i acceptance i of
ia isystem iis ihow ieasy ithey iperceive ithe isystem ito iuse. iIt iis iconsidered ias ione iof

ithe idimensions ithat ihave ithe ilargest iinfluence ion ithe iacceptance iof inew

itechnologies i (Aydin i& i Burnaz, i 2016). i According i to i Wei i (2017), i the i perceived

iease i of i use i refers ito i the i individual’s i perception i that i using i an i e-wallet i is

iuncomplicated ior ieasy ito ido. iE-wallet i is iperceived ias ieasy i to iuse, iit i also

iprovides imore iusefulness ito iits iusers. i The istudents ipreferred ie-wallet ipayment

imethod ibecause ithe iaccount i was ieasy ito iset i up i and iease iof iuse. iMoreover,

istudents ihave ithe ifreedom ito itransact iwhenever iand iwherever ithey iwant.

2.4 i i Rewards iand ibonuses

Aydin i& iBurnaz i(2016) idiscussed ia ireward ias ia iform iof itangible ibenefits,
isuch i as i coupons, i free i sample i gifts, i monetary i incentives i and

i sweepstakes which ican imotivate iconsumers. iThis itype iof imotivation iis
ioutwards iand irelates icertain ibehavior iof iindividuals ithat iaims ito iachieve

iparticular iresults. iTo iobtain ithese irewards/ itangible iincentives iconsumers iare

imaking ian ieffort. i To iencourage ithe i move itowards ia icashless iworld, ithe

igovernment ihas icome iup iwith idiscount iand ifreebies ion ie-wallet ipayments.

iSome ie-wallets iare ioffered ireward isimply iby ijust iusing ithem. iFor iexample, iE-

wallet iprovider ilike i“Boost” ioffers ito ishake irewards ifor ieach itransaction ithat
iconsumers imake. iEssentially, ithis iunique ifeature igives ibonus icash iback isimply

iby ijust ishaking ithe iphone. iAll ithings iconsidered, iusing ian ie-wallet ito imake

ipayments iis ia iwhole ilot imore iconvenient ithan iusing icash.
