Abstraction
Good morning class, so today we will be discussing about social literacy and how it
works when a person is communicating on other people.
Teachers Question Students possible answer
Class in your own understanding, what is - For me teacher, social means to
social? build a relationship with other
people.
Then what about literacy? - I think teacher literacy is the ability
to know how to read, write and to
communicate.
Okay thank you, so class what really social literacy is? Social literacy is defined as an
individual’s ability to successfully and deliberately mediate their world as family members,
workers, citizens and lifelong learners. Social Literacy is a student’s successful
performance and understanding of social skills, organizational skills, and communication
skills.
- In simple terms, Social Literacy, or sometimes referred to as social intelligence, is the
ability to build relationships, and maintain those relationships in any social environment.
In order to be successful, social literacy involves knowing how to express one’s own
emotions in a proper manner, and therefore, is often linked to Emotional Literacy.
Emotional Literacy
Emotional Literacy is the ability to recognize, understand and appropriately express our
emotions.
-It is simply how we control our emotions in different situation appropriately, for example;
you are angry towards someone just because he/she didn’t give you a piece of paper for
your quiz. If you are emotional literate, you will talk to him/her about your feelings
privately, instead of posting online or start gossiping.
Why is social Literacy important?
-Social Literacy is important because students must learn the necessary skills to
communicate and widen their social circles. Communication is crucial no matter where
you go. Whether it is being used at home to interact with family members or at school to
discuss with peers, being socially literate allows students to successfully expand their
social circles, and maintain those relationships.
For example: In a classroom without social literacy students cannot interact with their
classmates in a proper manner and probably will cause misunderstanding and their will
be no unity.
Social Literacy Skills
- it is an ability of individual can do to have a
good interaction with other people.
We have here four skills of Social literacy:
Maintaining Eye-contact
- First is maintaining eye contact for example as
you see in the picture they are talking face to face
without breaking their eye contact to maintain
their conversation.

Understanding Angry Feelings

-Second is understanding angry feelings,
example when your teacher is angry because you
are very noisy so must keep quiet and listen
attentively.

Handling Confrontation
-Third is handling confrontation, for example, if
you confront someone say it in a pleasant way to
avoid misunderstanding.

Collaborating Ideas
-Fourth is collaborating ideas, for example in a
classroom you have a group activity in order for you
to finish the tasks everyone should cooperate or
give their ideas about the given task.
Discussion
-Fifth is discussion, for example in a tutorial class,
everyone can state their question and their
teacher is the one who will answer those question
with an explanation.

Ability to meet new people

-And the last one is the ability to meet new people,
you need to be friendly and approachable to meet
different kind of people, example you’re a transferee
student, in order for you to have friends of course
you need to talk to them in a nice way.

Social Literacy and Technology

As technology begins to play a larger part of our daily interactions, the importance of
Social Literacy increases immensely.
-We need to teach you students to become socially literate, and how to express
themselves correctly can help to prevent bullying over the internet. It can also aid
students in handling their friendships and miscommunications better( on or off the
internet). Communicating through technology also becomes more frequent as students
grow and enter adulthood.

How can we incorporate social literacy into the classroom?

- So we have two ways to incorporate social literacy

1. Ways to incorporate social literacy

online:

BLOGGING
-First is through blogging students learn how
to effectively use the internet and share their
thoughts and knowledge appropriately.
Reading classmates blog posts and
responding helps students learn from others
and gives them access to others ideas, as
well as a chance to constructively respond.
CLASS WEBSITE
-Second is through class website it is
extremely useful in teaching students how
to use and navigate on the internet.
Keeping students updated on class
happenings, as well as giving student’s
opportunity to write and contribute on the
class website will teach them useful skills
in communicating on the internet.

VIDEO CONFERENCING
-Third is through video conferencing it has
endless possibilities. Whether it is
conferencing with a professional in the
community, or students from a culture across
the world, it opens up a realm of social
interaction that can teach students so much
about people in the world around them.

SOCIAL NETWORKING
-And lastly is through social networking in
this site it gives student opportunities to know
and learn about people all over the world in
a matter of seconds. Encouraging students
to meet people of other cultures and learn about social issues around the world is a
priceless opportunity-and we are so blessed to have sites like these to make it happen.

2. Ways to incorporate social literacy in a face to face environment:

GROUP PROJECTS
-First we have group projects, through this
the students will have opportunities to
interact face to face and experience social
interactions. It is so crucial that students
learn to interact with people effectively and
contribute their part.

PEER REVIEWING
-Second we have peer reviewing, it teaches
students how to give constructive advice
and communicate their thoughts well. To be
able to give constructive criticism and view
another person’s ideas is an important
ability.
FIELD TRIPS

-Third is we have field trips for example:

taking students to a museum or to volunteer
in an area in need could help students open
their eyes and learn about different
societies. On any field trip, even learning
how to travel in groups, communicate with
people in charge, and work together as a
group will be effective in teaching students
to be socially literate.

How has social literacy changed over time?

-In the past, social literacy was understood as a student’s ability to communicate in social
settings. This definition broadened and continues to broaden into more and more social
realms. Over time, and especially recently, social settings are changing from just a face
to face environment. For students to competently interact socially and communicate
effectively includes a newer and very present realm: the internet. Understanding how to
communicate appropriately and use technology effectively in our social lives is so
important in today’s world. We as teachers are responsible for using technology as an
advantage and fully using its benefits to improve social literacy even further.

Application

need to act and handle. You need to do the task within 2 minutes each group, 1
