The Medical Science Laboratory:

HISTORY

St. Scholastica’s College of Health Sciences opened 18 years ago. Through the efforts
of the Benedictine Congregation, a school that focused on health and science stood tall to this day. It
offered various courses and paved a way towards the exploration of the beauty of science in which until
now gives us the perspective that there’s more to life that is to be discovered and to be unveiled through
learning.
Pharmacy, Biology, and Psychology courses were offered by the college together with
the Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science course.
Years passed and the school changed its name to St. Scholastica’s College Tacloban
and the course itself continued to rise up. But as time went by, there were circumstances that challenged
the heart of the school. Several disastrous events such as the ST Yolanda and fires destroyed a lot of
facilities, laboratories and school buildings. However, strong winds and blazing stop did not stop the
college from educating young learners and molding their minds in the Medical Technology/Medical
Laboratory Science course. The school continued to produce top notchers from the MLS Department from
which Mr. Clive Ivan Mercado, who is currently a faculty in this department, came from. The students are
determined to excel in all aspects of their academic life through the efforts of the members of the MLS
Department.
The MLS Department still continues to build and promote good quality education as
of this day. This is evident through the achievements that the school has accomplished in terms of research,
which is the main focus of the department, and in producing top notchers in the board exams.
The Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science has continued to train and
equip students with knowledge and skills to become globally competitive and competent in various areas
of laboratory science.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

1 10
1111
The Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science is a
four-year program consisting of general education and professional courses. The second semester of the
fourth year level is internship training of six (6) months on an accredited training laboratory with rational
duties in different sections such as Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunohematology
(Blood Banking), Immunology and Serology, Urinalysis and other Body Fluids (Clinical Microscopy),
Parasitology, Histopathology/Cytologic techniques and other emergent technologies.

17

Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), also called Medical Technology (MT), is the
health profession that provides laboratory information and services needed for the diagnosis and treatment
of diseases. CIRCLE – (sacred hoop, ring): and ancient and universal symbol of unity and wholeness,
MICROSCOPE – symbolizes the uniqueness of the Medical Technology profession, wherein we can see
what others cannot see. The microscope is important to the Medical Laboratory Technology for many
reasons. The microscope is used in Hematology to observe different types of blood cells, so that they can
be counted and categorized, and checked for abnormalities. The microscope is used in Urine Analysis to
check for the presence of various types of crystals and white blood cells which could indicate a bladder
infection. The microscope is used in Microbiology and Parasitology to identify different types of bacteria
and parasites.
