Effect of Student Classroom Cell Phone Usage on Teachers

The increase in student cell phone use in classrooms has led to a decrease in
academic performance and satisfaction with instruction (Dietz & Henrich, 2014).
Currently, it is unknown as to whether student classroom cell phone usage has any
effect on the teacher. The purpose of this study was to determine student and teacher
opinions of classroom cell phone usage and perceived distraction. Surveys were
conducted with a sample of college students (N = 163) and college faculty (N = 289),
from a university in the Southeastern region of the United States. Data indicate there
are differing opinions on classroom cell phone usage between students and teachers.
Results revealed teachers believe significantly more than students that cell phones
should not be used during class. A majority of teachers also reported they have been
distracted by students using their phones, while only about half of the students believe
their teachers have been distracted by cell phones. Students using cell phones during
class may affect more than just their individual academic performance; student cell
phone use may actually have a negative impact on the entire class and the quality of
teaching.

A Case Study of Student Satisfaction

Satisfaction in higher education is a known predictor of outcomes such as retention, timely


graduation, emotional wellbeing, and post-graduation success. Despite its importance,
student satisfaction has rarely been qualitatively studied at the university level. As such,
students’ conceptions of satisfaction and its drivers are poorly understood by faculty and
institutions alike, especially with regard to development over time and gender. A further
complication is that common methods of investigating student satisfaction are difficult to apply
to language programs. Focusing on aspects that teachers can influence, this study used three
separate methods of accessing EFL students’ conceptions of satisfaction, with the long-term
aim of producing instruments appropriate to language classes and students’ grade level. The
methods employed were a written response to prompts on satisfaction, semi-structured
interviews, and a survey created with student assistance. Seven specific themes arising from
the data are: teaching quality, student participation, program value, quality of relationships,
richness of program content, a program-wide sense of continuity, and the opportunities the
program offers. Furthermore, results include that - for these participants - satisfaction is more
complex than any single L1 model suggests, is process-like, and can be better understood
through shorter, more engaging surveys than those administered institutionally.

Cyberbullying and Its Percussion on Youth

Cyberbullying is growing in our society and many teenagers get affected by its
devastating effects. I chose this subject because cyberbullying is very close to me since I am
a young adult that uses the Internet everyday, and it could happen to me. Also, cyberbullying
can have lasting repercussions on youth like mental health problem , extremely low self-
esteem or in severe cases it can lead to suicide. For my research, I analyzed three different
academic peer-reviewed articles from different academic disciplines : psychology, general
health and mental health. The first article "Cyberbullying and Self-Esteem" from the Journal
of School Health describes the psychological impacts of this type of bullying on the teenagers’
self-esteem and the possible solution. "Implications of Cyberspace Communication : A Role
of Physicians" from the Southern Medical Journal demonstrates the importance of medical
assistance for young adults regarding Internet use. Finally, the article "Cyber and Traditionnal
Bullying Victimization as a Risk Factor for Mental Health Problems and Suicidal Ideation in
Adolescents" from the Public Library of Science (PLOS) compares cyberbullying and bullying
while explaining how mental health problems in adolescence can have an impact of one’s
mental health in adulthood. My research provided an analysis of the problem from different
perspective in order to try and find the possible solutions to reduce cyberbullying and educate
the teenagers of its danger for both the victim and the perpetrator.
