Narrative Report

PRE-ACTIVITY

Last October 3, 2019, with the guidance of Outreach Coordinator, Dr. Judith dela

Cruz, the BSE Uniting (BSEU) Class A conducted a meeting in the presence of their

class adviser, Dr. Mabini Bahido, together with the other section, Class B. It was

decided on that meeting that as part of the institutional advocacy, an outreach

program shall be conducted to the less, deprived and underserved marginalized

group s.in the society. However, to benefit more, the two classes decided to have

separate outreach programs to different organizations.

BSEU Class A chose the Ladies of Charity- Home for the Aged located at Sunshine

Village, Brgy Banica, Roxas City. Target date was October 26, 2019 subject to

approval of class advisers Dr. Mabini Bahido, Dr. Judith Dela Cruz and department

dean, DR. Ivy G. Gorriceta.

On October 12 and 19, 2019, two meetings were conducted to talk on the details

of the outreach program. Originally, the program was scheduled on October 26,

2019; however, as per advice of the Dean’s Office, the activity should be moved

to another date to pave way for the Internal Research Conference. Thus, the

class finalized the date from October 26 to November 9.

Lalaine F. Luza
On October 18, 2019, the President, Lalaine F. Luza wrote a letter addressed to

Ladies of Charity - Home for the Aged asking them permission to conduct the

said outreach program with them. She personally went to the site to deliver the

letter and talkedto Ms. Robit Sayed, the home care nurse. She received the letter

and conveyed that it is good as approved; thus, November 9, starting 9am to 12

noon, was set to be the activity of the BSEU Class A.

Ms. Luza likewise asked some information about the organization and the number

of elders currently sheltered in the home care, their needs. Accordingly, there are

10 female elders whose age ranges from 67 to 99 years old. Most of them were

already homeless and abandoned by their families. The following class meeting

on October 19, 2019, the approval of the Ladies of Charity was conveyed to the

class to the advisers and the members of the class. Another meeting was held to

discuss the details of the activity. The group decided to come up with their Class

Shirt which will be worn during the activity for identification and unison. Also, the

group decided as to the amount to be contributed and raised to defray the

necessary expenses of the activity. The contribution amounted to five hundred

(php 500) per member which will cover the class shirt which cost is Php200

including the printing and the P300 will be allotted to the Home for the Aged

which covered the goods to be donated, lunch for the 10 elders and 5 staffs.

However, there were some members of the class who generously donated food

for the entire group for snacks and some give-aways for the elders. (See Appendix

B for the Financial Statement and Liquidation)

Ms. Aguilar, the treasurer took charge with the purchase of T-shirts and printing

with the assistance of Mr. ER Heart Albay. During the meeting, deadline for

contribution was set on October 26 and the program flow was likewise discussed

by Rev. Noriel Maranan and Rev. Elikiam Q. Yanson. After discussing the program,

the class was divided into four (4) groups. Each group presented an intermission

number. Groups 1, 2 and 4 did song and dance numbers while group 3 was in-

charge of games and prizes to entertain the elders.

Confirmation with Ladies of Charity was done a week before and purchase o

goods to be donated to the organization was done on November 8, 2019 led by

Ms. Josel Nalica and Mona Kaycil Lantoria with Ms. Lalaine Luza.

All members were assigned their tasks before, during and after the activity.

DURING THE ACTIVITY

The call time for the activity started at 8:30 AM; however, as early as 8:00 AM some

members of the class, particularly those assigned in the physical arrangement,

sound system, program came early to prepare. The president, as the over-all in-

charge came to oversee the set up with the generous help of the members of

At exactly 8:30 AM, participants started to arrive and register. There were twenty-

seven (27) who were present on the day of the activity. Present during the activity

were the very supportive and dynamic Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Ivy

G. Gorriceta, Dr. Judith dela Cruz, Extension Services Coordinator and Dr. Mabini

Bahido. At around 8:45 AM, the elders were brought out to the area for the first

activity which was the talk and share. We were introduced to 10 women whose

beauty, strength and wisdom radiated the moment they entered the activity

area. They were Fe Balsote (99years old); Trinidad Acat (89 years old); Remedios

Jimenez (87 years old); Clara Acurantes (85 years old); Leonora Fabular (84 years

old); Renee Binas (84 years old); Natividad Fernandes (81 years old); Cecilia

Mamato (79 years old); Mila Yape (76 years old; and, Zenaida Bajada (67 years

old).

Members of the class were assigned an elder to talk and share with them the

elder’s life experiences and how they ended in the home care. Obviously, from

the looks on their faces, the 10 elders were delighted to see people from the

outside visiting them. Most of them started shedding tears as they tell their stories;

kissing and embracing the students tightly. From their stories, most of them were

abandoned by their families. They have no one. They cried in misery but they

managed to laugh and smile with their visitors.

After the sharing, the program started with a prayer through a video presentation

entitled, “Who Am I?”It was followed by a simple yet meaningful opening remarks
delivered by Dr. Mabini Bahido. Afterwards, a group presentation was presented

by Group 1. They sang a song entitled, “Kahit Maputi na Ang Buhok Ko,”

dedicated to the elders; some of whom were misty-eyed upon hearing the song.

After the said presentation, the first set of group reflection were given by a number

of students who were able to talk and share with the elders. With the permission

of the elders, the students talked about their life, family, love and feelings of being

at the home care. On the part of the students, the realization of getting old with

no one to take care of you, importance and love for parents were emphasized.

After the reflection, game number 1 was undertaken to brighten up the mood.

Students played for the elders. The game was cookie relay. The winning group

gave their prizes to the elders.

The next that followed was the sort message from Dr. Ivy G. Gorriceta, Dean of

the College of Education of CPC. She conveyed her gratitude to the Ladies of

Charity – Home for the Aged for the warm accommodation and for being able

to share something to our elders. Another set of group presentation was done by

Group 3 with their Kiss Me, Kiss Me Zumba Dance. All participated in the dance

including the youngest elder, Nanay Zenaida Bajada. Afterwards, another set of

students gave their reflection about the heart warming and emotional talk with

the elders. This was followed again by game number 2 entitled pass the message.

Winning group likewise gave their prizes to the elders; to the latters’ delight.
To cut the program shorter, the organizer dispensed with the 3rd group

presentation and proceeded to reflection. Another set of students expressed their

encounter with the elders. Similarly, the stories of the elders assigned to them

touched them with love, affection and concern for the elders, as well as their

realization of life’s reality about aging.

The last game was singing nursery rhymes by 2 teams which entertained the

audience.

After the last game, the awarding of Certificate to the Ladies of Charity-Home for

the Aged followed with Dean Ivy Gorriceta, Dr. Judith dela Cruz and Dr. Mabini

Bahido as presenters. Also, through the Class president Lalaine F. Luza, one (1)

sack of rice and groceries containing milk, canned goods, toiletries, bread, snacks

and other household items were turned over to the home care.

Also, all the elders and staffs, including student-participants were given rosaries

courtesy of Bros. Maranan and Yamson.

Acceptance speech was given by Ms. Robit Sayed, the staff nurse and one of the

persons in-charge in the home care. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the

College of Education of Collegio dela Prusima Concepcion, specifically the BSE

Uniting Class A for their generosity and kindness. She wished that the said activity

will not be the first and the last but rather, more succeeding visits will happen.
The closing remarks was given by Dr. Judith Dela Cruz, who likewise expressed

happiness and gratitude for making the event successful.

Group photos with the elders, staffs and the class were taken. Afterwards, prayer

before meal was recited. The elders were brought to the dining area to eat the

simple lunch brought to them by the group. They hugged and kissed the students

expressing their happiness and gratitude.

The rest of the group likewise shared the little snacks prepared by some generous

classmates.

The activity ended at around 1:30 PM. The group cleaned the area before

leaving.

It was unforgettable and meaningful experience for the BSEU Class A to visit Ladies

of Charity-Home for the Aged. Appreciation, love, care and affection for the

elders were strengthened and they were reminded of God’s third

commandment: “Honor they father and they mother.”

POST ACTIVITY

BSEU Class A was excited to share their experiences through their written reflection

attached here. The elders definitely touched the hearts of all the participants with

their sad but meaningful and inspiring stories. Beside the academic requirements,

the most important lessons learned from this activity is to love and care for the

people who once cared for us ---our parents and the elders. Mostly, members of
the class have their personal action taken to help and spread the news of the

elders through social media.

The activity served as a reminder to all of us of what God has commanded us:

Honor your father and your mother. The elders were once children who had

journeyed through life and became parents and guardians for those who needed

guidance, protection and love. But unfortunately, they were abandoned by the

same people whom they had taken care of. The dusk of life looms over them,

hoping that they might see their family and love ones once again.

On the other hand, students of BSE Uniting Class A are grateful to the school for

initiating activities like this through its Community Extension Services Program. The

values and advocacy inculcated in the minds and hearts of the students will truly

serve God above all through helping the poor, depressed and underserved like

these abandoned elders. It is the hope of the class that these endeavors will

continue and as they go their separate path shall continue such advocacy.

Heartfelt gratitude is extended to the triumvirate partnership of dedicated,

supportive, active and understanding dean of the College of Education, Dr. Ivy

G. Gorriceta, as well as the guidance and understanding of the subject teachers

Dr. Judith dela Cruz and Dr. Mabini Bahido. The activity likewise bonded all the

members of the class. They had learned to work, compromise and cooperate

with one another. Gratitude is likewise extended to Ladies of Charity – Home for

the Aged especially to the warm welcome and accommodation of the staff and

of course to the ten (10) amazing women who have fully lived their lives with faith,
hope and love despite the absence and care of their true family. With the home

care and the visitors and guests visiting them, they have found the home, love

and care. God is truly good for He allowed us to understand human life through

example. May He continue to bless the elders with His faithfulness, love and

mercy.

To sum up, the activity was undertaken with simplicity but was carried out

successfully. It was organized well and it went smoothly. The class departed at

around 1:00Pm with happiness in their hearts.
