he Human Capital and Economic
Opportunity Global Working Group and
the Research Institute of Economics and
Management at Southwestern University
of Finance and Economics are delighted
to announce their Summer School on
Socioeconomic Inequality, Chengdu (SSSI
2020) over 5 days, under the direction of
Steven Durlauf and Li Gan.
SSSI 2020 will provide a state-of-the-
art overview of the study of inequality
and human flourishing. Participants will
learn about integrating psychological and
sociological perspectives into conventional
economic models to understand the
foundations of human behavior. Through
rigorous lectures, students will be exposed
to tools needed to study the dynamic
processes that produce conditions of
inequality and ways to address it.
During this intense program,
students attend lectures,
engage in discussions
with leading faculty,
present their
own research, and interact with peers. Applications are due March 31, 2020

The summer school is open to Ph.D. and
early postdoctoral scholars from around
the world. There is no program fee for
admitted students. Housing and some
meals are provided.
SSSI has previously been held in Chicago
(2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017), Beijing
(2013, 2014, and 2015), Bergen (2019)
Chengdu (2019), Guangzhou (2016 and
2017), Bonn (2016 and 2018), Moscow
(2017 and 2019), and Cambridge,
UK (2014).
