Why Plagiarism is Not in Students’ Best Interest

Plagiarism is when an individual presents another individual’s work and or ideas as if it is

their own. It is also when there is not creditable acknowledgment regarding the original person’s

work and or ideas. “Plagiarism is a type of intellectual theft” What is Plagiarism? (n.d.).

When plagiarism occurs and there is no credit given to the original individual for their

work, it can lead into serious consequences depending on location. If you use another’s images,

videos, and music without crediting the person is also called plagiarism. While it isn't a criminal

or civil offense in America, it still falls under the bracket of illegal activity (Is Plagiarism Illegal?

conducting research to give credit to the original author where it is due.

If a student conducts plagiarism in a school setting, such as college, this can lead into

serious compilations. College students are a greater risk of plagiarism when conducting a

research assessment. The Center for Academic Integrity did a study “that almost 80% of college

students admit to cheating at least once” CheckForPlagiarism.net. (n.d.). Global Cyber

Plagiarism & Statistics 2019-2020. Another survey gathered information that 36% of

undergraduate students have plagiarized another’s written content. At a college level,

consequence for plagiarism can possibly include, losing credit received from completing courses,

no longer receive scholarships, grants, and FAFSA. When using information that is found and

used it is important to credit the individual’s information.

It is not in the students’ best interest to plagiarize and avoid consequences. There are

website and programs to provide information on how to correctly credits other’s work and to

ensure you are not plagiarizing. It is critical to “always cite your sources” (2018, September 13).

Whether you are writing a research paper, presentation, and or a film.
