Simple Brand Creation 

Checklist  
 
 

When it comes down to it, a brand is simply a name—but there 

are steps you need to follow to create a good one. Picking a 
name at random without any thought is not going to work.  

There are only three steps to follow: 

1. Choose Your Brand Name  

2. Create Your Logo  

3. Create Your Brand Assets  

Choose Your Brand Name  

1. Your brand name should be related to the market in which you are selling 
(especially the demographic) 
 
Example: Fitness-related brand:  
 
● Golden Age Athletics (older demographic)  
● Elite Athletics (professional/advanced demographic)

2. Your brand name should not restrict your choice of future products 
 
Example: Yoga brand:  
 
● Yoga for You  
● Bare Movement 
 
The latter brand name gives you much more scope for the future.  
 
3. Ensure that your brand name passes the “phone test” 
 
Example: ​Smart Solutions​ is much easier than ​Ingenious Solutions 
 
● Make sure it is easy to spell, pronounce, and remember 
● Phone your friends or family and test it 
 
4. Make sure that your brand name is available  
 
● Go to ​the USPTO trademark database 
● Use the ​Basic Word Mark Search​ to check it has not been trademarked 
 
5. Make sure that your brand name domain is available 
 
● Go to ​www.namecheap.com​ and enter your brand name without any 
spaces or punctuation 
● Make sure the .com domain is available 
 
If it passes all the tests, congratulations, you have your brand name!

Create Your Logo  

A designer does most of the work for you, but you must provide them with: 
 
1. Your preferred color scheme 
2. Directions on the look and feel (edgy, professional, youthful, refined, etc.) 
3. An idea of what your market might respond to—if you’re not sure, look at 
other brands in your market, and check out their logos 
 
Make sure you follow these guidelines when designing a logo: 
 
1. It should be easy to read or recognize 
2. It must work well on both a dark and a light background 
3. Simpler is better (think about the Apple logo) 
 
Trust your designer and make sure you get their input on your ideas 
—remember that they are the professional.  
 
Where to Get Your Logo Designed 
 
There are many places where you can get your logo designed, but we 
recommend the following, as they work whether you have a small or a large 
design budget:  
 
1. Fiverr: ​Providers on this site offer all kinds of services (or “gigs”).  
a. Logo design = $5 to $20 
a. The good: Fast and cheap

b. The not so good: Not the highest quality, and you can only use one 
designer per gig 
 
2. 99 Designs:​ Post a job on this site, and designers submit their designs. 
a. Cost: $299+ 
b. The good: Higher quality and a large number of designs 
c. The not so good: More expensive and can be slower (5-7 days) 

Create Your Brand Assets  

Brand Asset #1 (required): Brand Website 
 
1. Can be simple no need for a complicated website 
2. Use Wix, Squarespace or Wordpress for instance 
3. They all contain drag and drop builders 
4. No web design experience required 
5. Include your Brand Name and Logo on main page 
  
Brand Asset #2 (required): FB Brand Page 
 
1. The process is very straightforward 
2. Facebook have made it a very easy step by step process 
3. Go to ​https://www.facebook.com/pages/creation/ 
4. Start with the Brand or Website option
