Can idly batter be used to make dosa?

Dosa is such an essential part of the Indian diet. It is a signature meal that people all over India
love and cherish. The best part about dosas is that they can be had in a wide variety of ways.
Vegetarians can enjoy it with chutney, different curries and sambar and an unlimited variety of
vegetable fillings. Non-vegetarians can enjoy dosa with chicken, fish, egg in all forms.

Dosa is such an easy dish to prepare that anyone can make it anytime and anywhere. The only
thing you need is to get your hands on some batter. Here lies the problem for many people.
Sometimes they don’t have any dosa batter with them or they only have idly batter. Regular idly
batter is not the ideal way to make dosa as it does not cook the same way.

This means that households have to stock up on both idly batter and dosa batter. A situation
that is less than ideal. This means that when you feel like having dosa, you need instant dosa
batter. When you feel like having idly, you need instant idly batter. What if you could have both
at the same time?

If you could have both idly and dosa batter at the same time, you would no longer have to choose
between everybody's two favourite dishes- idly and dosa. The main reason most people think that
they need to buy both these forms of batter separately is that they believe it affects quality. This
is because most of the common forms of batter are not suitable for cooking both dosas and idlies.
Though they can be used to make both, very few kinds of batter can actually make good idlies
and dosas at the same time. Usually, one can be used to make only dosas or idlies. Keeping a
batter that can do both saves you so much time and effort. You don’t need to worry about having
to need one.

• Wash the pack before you use the batter.

• Cut open the pack and add salt if required. The batter is only mildly salted.

• If you are making idlies, directly scoop the batter out and pour it into the idly steamer. Stir
the batter before pouring it into the moulds of the idly steamer for the softest idlies.

• If you are making dosas, add some water to dilute the batter. After dilution, the batter can
no longer be used to make idlies.

• To make the perfect dosa, stir the batter before pouring it out on the pan and spreading it.

• Serve hot with an accompaniment of your choice.
