● Demonstrate an understanding of addition (limited to 1- and 2-digit numerals) with answers to 100 and
the corresponding subtraction.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
● Apply subtraction strategies in solving a variety of 2 digit subtraction problems.
● Students will learn to create subtraction problems using spinners.

ASSESSMENTS

- Are students engaged and participating during whole group lesson.
- Students are engaged and on task during table work.
Written/Performance Tasks
- Spinner Subtraction Activity

PURPOSE OF LESSON

new skill in an engaging and meaningful way.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

● Student spinners
● Student activity page
● Whiteboard and whiteboard markers
● Paper clips
● Pencils

ADAPTATIONS
● Work in a small group with Ronny and Drayten. Consistently check on Mikyla, Bailey, and Layla to
check for understanding.
● Patricia working with Lucas S

PROCEDURE
Introduction: (6 Minutes)
ASSESSMENT OF PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
Ask: Who can tell me what happens to the numbers when we are subtracting? Do the numbers get bigger or smaller?
● Ring chimes to bring students to carpet. Start timer to record how long it takes them to transition.
● Explain to students that we will be learning a new activity to help us practice our 2 digit subtraction. But, before we
begin we have to remember what two strategies we have learned so far to help us. Invite students to recall what
those strategies are.
● Invite 2 students up to demonstrate/model these strategies.

MOVEMENT BREAK: 15 jumping jacks and tuck jumps

Activity 1 :( 5 Minutes)
LEARNING ACTIVITY 1
● Explain to the students that we will be now learning our new spinner activity.
● Show the students that they will be using two different spinners. Explain that the number from the first spinner (A)
will go on top. While the number from the second spinner will go on the bottom. Write this on the board as a visual
for students to come back to.
● Demonstrate how to use the spinner with their pencil. Instruct the students that wherever the paper clips stops is the
number they will use. If it lands on a line, just pick one of the numbers beside it.
● Model on the whiteboard what it will look like to write it in the boxes.
● Remind the students that the purpose of this activity is to become experts at 2 digit adding. Write our I can statement
on the board as a reminder.

● Once the students have gotten started, work closely with Ronny and Drayten (to get her started and focused.)
Circulate the classroom to check on other students as needed.
