This book came together quite differently than we thought it would. First, we under-estimated the work
involved, and so the book is a few years later than we thought it would be. Second, as mentioned in our
first book, we thought that this book would be about Britain and America. As time went on, we gathered
more and more information about the Schipperkes in Britain, and the more information we gathered, the
more we wondered how it all connected together; so, with the help of Ian Millar, we began ordering the
kennel records of the early Schipperke from the British Kennel Records, until we had them spanning 5
decades. As we built the pedigrees for these dogs, we could fill in dates and connections, so the back part
of this book became about sharing those pedigrees. Even without that, the book on just Britain was far
larger than the one on the European countries, so the second volume of The Historical Schipperke
became about the Schipperke in Britain alone. Volume III (if all goes as planned) will be about America
and other countries (including Canada, Australia, and South Africa).
First, to our friends who helped us with so much of the typing, Patricia McClain, Leigh Dudley, Sue
DeBruhl, every little bit helped more than you can know. Also, Jill Caltabiano, even though she did not
help with the book, her help in other areas was invaluable and gave us more time to work on the book.
To Mandy Rollinson, who helped with some pedigrees and sent us the championship list.
But most of all, Ian Millar. He has given advise, help, shared beautiful things from his personal
collections to be included here (most of which was credited to him, but if something slipped through the
cracks, we apologize) , and discussed various issues with us many, many times. He helped us get the
Breeder Records from the British Kennel Club, which was so invaluable in understanding so much of
what was in the various articles, and the connections between the dogs, the people, and the time periods.
And to Woody Harris: thank you for inspiring us to keep moving on this book.
As with Volume I, this collection is the tip of the iceberg. Who knows how much has been lost through
time... breeder's ads, pictures, articles, newsletters about what was happening in the country. Our
research stops loosely around WWII. Though we have added various notes, especially in the breeders
section, most of the pieces in this book have been added as closely to the original as possible. While we
have certainly not caught all of our “typos” in this book, many you see have been included simply
because they were in the original. In a few places, we included a correction after, in parenthesis and in
italics.
Some of the dogs in these books have left no legacy in the breed. Some of the people, though producing
many Schipperkes in their breeding career, produced few to no Schipperkes that left a legacy that can still
be found today. Other Schipperkes, and their breeders, produced dogs that can be found behind many, if
not all, of the Schipperkes today: in Britain, in South Africa and Australia, in France, and in the USA
and Canada. If you own a pedigreed Schipperke, chances are extremely high that you can trace its
ancestry back to some of these dogs.
