COMPUTATION

WE NEED: H20 consumption per day for the Saint Paul University of the Philippines.

Average daily consumption of Water (US Gallon)

POPULATION = 10,000 (240 LCPD)

3 SCIENCE LABORATORIES = 50

3 DORMITORY = 70

2 FOODS LABORATORY = 50

1 gallon is equal to 3.785 liters

240 liters/day which is (1/3.785 gallon/liters) = 63.41 gallon/day

POPULATION = 10,000 (63.41 gallon/day) = 634,100

TOTAL of gallons per day = 634,100 + 50 + 70 + 50 = 634,270

634,270 gal/day [(3.785 liters/gal) (1/1000 m^3/liters)] = 2400 m^3/day

; H20 consumption per day is 2400 m^3/day

WE NEED: Dimension and design of the tank.

We use Cylinder tank and has height to radius ratio of 2:1

r = h/2

Volume = pi (r)^2 (h)

2400 = pi (h/2)^2(h)

h = 14.51 m and r = 14.51/2 = 7.26 m

WE NEED: Pressure for the Elevated tank and Pump for the tank to be refill.

We asked one of the staff of water district in Tuguegarao for the standard pressure of the main
pipe of Metropolitan Water District of Tuguegarao City.

P = 550 kPa ; if Q = 0.0038 ; w = 9810

P = Q (w) (HA)

Where:

Q = volume flow rate of water (m^3/s)

w = water density (kg/m^3)

HA = energy added or head (m)

P = horsepower for pump (hp)

Bernoulli’s Energy Theorem

V1^2/2g + P1/w + Z1 + HA= V2^2/2g + P2/w + Z2 + HL

550/9.81 + 0 = Ptank/9.81 + 9

Ptank = 462 kpa

9 is the height of the support column and

12.5 is height from the bottom of tank to the water surface

550/9.81 + 0 + HA = 462/9.81 + 0 + (9+12.5)

HA = 12.53 m

P = .0038 (9810) (12.53)

=467.09 watts divided by 746 for hp

P= 0.626 hp

No need to have booster pump.

WE NEED: Diameter of pipe

The general rule to maintain a velocity through pipe. ; V(max) = 1.5 m/s

Note: Highest flow velocity in pipe will cause banging sound.

Inlet pipe of tank

If Q = 0.0038 m^3/s

We use this formula to get the minimum pipe diameter

D = square root of (4Q/Vmax)

D = square root of (4(.0038)/1.5)

D = 100 mm

Or

D = 4” PVC pipe

Outlet pipe of tank

If Q = 0.0085 m^3/s

D = square root of (4Q/Vmax)

D = square root of (4(.0085)/1.5)

D = 150 mm

Or

D = 6” PVC pipe
WE NEED: what building need a pump to supply h20 demand.

Ptank = 462

6th storey building; if Q = .0085

Bernoulli’s formula

V1^2/2g + P1/w + Z1 + HA= V2^2/2g + P2/w + Z2 + HL

9 is the height of support column and

18 is the height of 6th storey in meters (3x6)

We consider 3 meters per storey

462/9.81 + 9 = P/9.81 + 18

P = 374 kPa

HL = 2(1.5^2/2(9.81))

HL = .229

0 + 0 + 9 + HA =18 +.229

HA = 9.229

P=Q(W)(HA)

P=(.0085)(9810)(9.229)

P = 1.03 hp

4th storey building

3 x 4th storey = 12 meters

462/9.81 + 9 = P/9.81 +12

P = 435 kPa

HL = 3(1.5^2/2(9.81))
HL = .344 m

0 + 0 + 9 + HA =12 +.344

HA = 3.344

P=Q(W)(HA)

P=(.0085)(9810)(3.344)

P = 0.37 hp

2nd storey

3 x 2nd storey = 6 meters

462/9.81 + 9 = P/9.81 +6

P = 492 kPa

HL = (1.5^2/2(9.81))

HL = .115 m

0 + 0 + 9 + HA =6 +.115

HA = 2.885

P=Q(W)(HA)

P=(.0085)(9810)(2.885)

P = 0.32 hp

OBSERVATION: base from what we observed on computation, the bigger Pressure in tank the
better force to deliver the water that’s why;

1. 6th storey building need booster pump ( GLOBAL )

2. need booster pump ( JUNIOR HIGHSCHOOL BLDG., ELEMENTARY BLDG., ST. PIO BLDG.,
FLC BLDG. ,DORM )
3. 2nd Storey and 1st storey building no need booster pump
