Stand-up Monte by Garrett Thomas ‘What: A stand- up Monte/wild card routine. Inspired by a routine from the great Scotty York. Set-up: You have four cards. Stack the four cards as follows from the bottom up; First the face up three of diamonds (3D), on top of that the face-up Ace of clubs (AC), then the two Double-faced (DF) cards with AC side up. The double faced cards will be referred to as DF3 if the three side is face up and DFA if the ace side is face up. Place these cards in your pocket with the DFA card closest to your body. How: Reach into your pocket and remove the top card (3D). “Did you ever see the game guys play on the street called 3 Card Monte? ... Let's see how you do with one card”. Move the card back and forth between your two hands. Jokingly ask, “Where's the 3D"? Chuckle as y ou say, “They always let you win the first time ... now lets see how you do with two cards.” Remove the next card (AC) from your pocket. Show the ace as you say, “The ace is the money card, the card you want to follow”. Mix the two cards again and ask them, “Where's the ace?” Ifthey guess right say, “You're good at this. You've done this before.” If they guess wrong say, “See you weren't watching ...let’s see how you do with three cards”. Hold the two cards with the Ace on top in one hand. With the other hand, bring out the next card (DF3 card with the 3D showing ... don’t expose the AC on the back). Place this DF3 in the middle, as you turn the AC face down saying, “This is the back of the money card.” Turn the AC back face up so itis on top of the other two cards, Take the top two cards (AC and the DF3) into the palm up right hand. Your thumb is on top of the cards. Turn the cards over by turning your hand palm down. As you do that ‘your right thumb pushes the AC forward as your fingers pull back on the other card. (this is the Tumover Move see Ill. | & 2). As you are doing the Tumover Move, your left hand also turns its card face down. Say “Unfortunately, the back of the money card looks just like the back of these threes.” Position Check: the left hand is holding a face down 3D, and in the right hand a face down AC under the DFA. Place the left hand card face up on top of the right hands cards and say “Hold ou your hand and keep your eyes on the ace.” Take the top two cards and do the turnover move and place the face down 3D in spectator’s hand (they will believe that they are holding the AC). Ask them, “Do you know where the ace is? It's over here.” Show the AC in the left hand. Place the DF3 below the face up AC in the left hand, Take the spectators 3D with your right hand and show it, (that is if they had not have already looked, which they usually will do.) Do the Turnover Move with your left hand and place the face down card (AC) onto the spectator’s hand. “Let's try again. Don’t take your eyes off of the ace”. The DFA is taken into the right hand below the 3D. Do the Turnover Move into your left hand, asking, “Where is the ace?” No matter what they answer, you respond by taking the face up DF3 and use it to tum over the face down 3D that is in your LH showing two 3D. Keep the DF3 on top of the 3D so both cards are face up.
