Schrobenhausen, Germany –
In October 2017, Bauer was
awarded the contract to ex-
pand the world’s biggest indus-
trial constructed wetland in the
Sultanate of Oman on behalf of
Petroleum Development Oman
(PDO), the leading oil and gas
exploration and production
company in the country. The
plant’s first stage was complet-
ed in 2011 by BAUER Nimr LLC,
the local subsidiary of BAUER
Resources GmbH. The flagship
project for treating contaminat-
ed water from oil extraction in
the Sultanate of Oman in Nimr
has won numerous interna-
tional awards for excellence in
sustainability, innovation and
safety. The innovative wetland
treatment technology is unique
in utilizing gravity-flow and natu-
ral processes to remove a heavy
load of hydrocarbons from the
water.
The facility is remarkable for its
size, covering 10.5 km2. In ad-
dition to the excellent treatment
performance, with the hydrocar-
bon content in water being re-
duced to below 0.5 ppm at the
outlet of the wetlands, almost
95% of the crude oil entering the
facility is recovered or removed
without the use of electricity or
chemicals. Following an expan-
sion in 2014, 115,000 m3 can
now run through the plant every
day. Furthermore, the desert
site has been converted into a
home to more than 140 species
of animals, including a multitude
of birds, fish and reptiles.
The commissioned expansion
will now see the plant’s capabili-
ty being expanded by 60,000 m3
per day to reach a total capacity
of 175,000 m3 per day. BAUER
Nimr LLC will be responsible
for designing, constructing and
operating the plant until 2044.
The entire project is worth over
EUR 160 million, whereof the
construction works amount to
about one-quarter of the total
volume. Construction will be
finished by the end of 2019, af-
ter which Bauer will operate the
plant on a 25-year basis.

Cairo, Egypt – The story of
BAUER EGYPT S.A.E., the third
oldest overseas subsidiary of
BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH,
is a success story that not many
other specialist foundation en-
gineering companies can boast
about. Bauer Egypt has been in-
volved in the construction of nu-
merous bridges on the Nile – in-
cluding the first-ever bridge over
the Suez Canal – and several
barrages. The subsidiary’s long
list of past and present projects
also includes many inner-city
specialist foundation engineering
projects – often in Cairo, where
the company has its headquar-
ters.
Bauer Egypt was founded in
1981, together with Egyptian

about 1,250 m² of soft gel blan-
ket covering. Four diaphragm
wall shafts with a depth of up
to 85 m and a diameter of 21 m
were constructed for the ventila-
tion system of the new road tun-
nels. Among other equipment,
two BC 40 trench cutters were
used, one on an MC 128 and
the other on an MC 96 duty-cy-
cle crane, as well as two BG 28
drilling rigs with mast extensions
for the execution of the soft-gel
blanket.
Bauer Egypt will soon com-
mence the ground freezing work
required for the construction of
several subterranean connecting
passages between the two near-
ly 6-km-long road tunnels under
the Suez Canal – a detailed re-
port will be published soon! The
two tunnels are planned to be
completed in 2018.
For the past several years, Bauer
Egypt has also been involved in
another large-scale infrastructure
project – the extension of the
Cairo metro – which is expected
to significantly ease traffic in the
metropolis of Cairo. The metro
carries around 3.5 million pas-
sengers in the nation’s capital
city on a daily basis. Lines 1 and
2 were built between 1985 and
2002 without the involvement of
Bauer. When construction of line
3 started in 2008 – the construc-
tion being divided into several
phases – an increasing number
of cutters from Bauer were used
to construct the walls of the un-
derground stations. In phase 1,
Bauer Egypt cut the diaphragm
walls for four of the five stations.
In phase 2, all four station walls
were executed by Bauer. For
phase 4, which was moved for-
ward, the company once again
executed the diaphragm walls
for all four stations, from 2014 to
2017.
In September of this year, Bauer
Egypt finally started the special-
ist foundation engineering work
for Phase 3a, which will run be-
low the Nile and includes six un-
derground stops. A 280,000 m²
diaphragm wall with a depth
of 73 m and about 24,000 m²
of underground sealing are to
be constructed for this pur-
pose. Five BC 40 trench cutters
mounted on MC 128 and MC
96 duty-cycle cranes are being
used. The underground sealing
element will be executed using
five BG 28 drilling rigs with ex-
tended masts for drilling up to

hired – all of whom were locals.
That is exactly what the goal was
from the beginning: to begin with
Bauer employees from Germany
and then proceed with local em-
ployees.

In the spring of 2005, BMA ac-
quired the company TracMec
Srl. from the then owner Gallotti
based in Imola in northern Ita-
ly, located 40 km from Bologna.
TracMec manufactures small
undercarriages for Bauer equip-
ment, as well as for third parties.
In order to fully draw on existing
resources and simultaneously
optimize processes in Italy, this
location became home to BAU-
ER Macchine Italia Srl (BMI) as
well.
Founded in August 2007, this
Italian Bauer Maschinen subsid-
iary started operations in Janu-
ary 2008. It was a small team –

moved from Schrobenhausen,
and Alberto Dalle Coste returned
to Italy as Managing Director. Al-
berto Dalle Coste took charge
of sales as well as services and
spare parts service. “We were
commissioned to do everything
with our own resources,” he re-
calls, referring to the time when
the company was founded.
In 2010, there were two reasons
to celebrate: Bauer Macchine
was awarded ‘Service Partner of
the Year’ by BMA, and BMI hired
its 10th employee despite the
Italian construction market cri-
sis. But along with the number
of employees, the office space
also had to grow: In early 2011,
Bauer Macchine moved into
the new 500 m² facility within
the TracMec production block.
“Moving from our workshop tent
to a ‘real’ workshop enabled
us to carry out more extensive
and complex maintenance and
repair work for our customers,”
says Alberto Dalle Coste. “The
official opening of the newly in-
stalled 16-tonne gantry crane
was of course marked appro-
priately in traditional Italian style
with red wine, Prosecco and
Pasticcini.”
In 2013, Bauer Macchine per-
fected the high service standard
for its local customers when it
gave a Bauer machine a com-
plete overhaul for the first time.
Ten years ago, Bauer Macchine Italia (BMI) started operations with a team of
three. Today there are 15 employees.

Abu Dhabi – On October 10,
2017, employees of the Re-
sources subsidiary Bauer Emir-
ates Environment (BEE) cele-
brated the 10th anniversary of
their company. The event was
held at the Yas Marina Circuit in
Abu Dhabi. The event included
a kart race, which was followed
by a festive dinner.
This celebration not only was an
opportunity to bring together all
the employees in a festive at-
mosphere, but it also provided a
beautiful setting to look back to-
gether at the success achieved
in the last decade as well as to
highlight the company’s growing
role in engineering and environ-
mental services in the region. In
his speech, Managing Director
Marcus Schmuelling highlighted
the wide range of projects and
emphasized that there were nu-
merous challenges which were
successfully overcome espe-
cially due to the commitment of
every employee and the flexibil-
ity within the company as well
as in the BAUER Group. “Today,
in our region, we are amongst
the key players in this industry,”
says Marcus Schmuelling.

flood disaster victims

spontaneously and provides help: BAUER AG and
many of its employees donated a total of 15,000 euros
to the colleagues affected by the catastrophic floods.
Robert Kaindl from BMA Sales North America officially
handed over the check in Houston in November.
Alberto Palazzi and Suzette Olivan (NEOrig), Radhika
Hebbar and Jochen Grundmann (Bauer Pileco) and
some of the Bauer employees directly affected by the
disaster accepted the check on behalf of all recipi-
ents. Dirk Himborg from RTG Sales North America,
and Robert Kaindl would like to thank all employees
for their overwhelming willingness to help. “With this
gesture, they have expressed solidarity with our American colleagues. It was our keen desire to support them,” says Dirk Himborg, who, in Septem-
ber, had called for emergency aid. BAUER AG added to the amount contributed by Bauer employees. “We are aware of how serious the situation is
for some of our colleagues at the site,” says Hartmut Beutler, BAG’s CFO, adding: “With this emergency aid we wish to set an example of solidarity

Reminiscing about his time at
Bauer – almost 35 years – it is
not just the spectacular large-
scale projects that come to his
mind, but also the medium-sized
and smaller contracts in particu-
lar, wherein it was apparent: The
client had chosen Bauer as an
equal partner because he had
faith in the technical capabilities
and the employees of the com-
pany.
Since 2004, he has headed the
domestic division – a duty which
he will now hand over to Frank
1, 2018. The 56-year-
old civil engineer had
previously worked with
Züblin for more than
25 years, where he
had worked in many
different departments
and was involved in
construction projects on the do-
mestic front as well as abroad, for
instance, the Sony Center in Ber-
lin and the underground railway in
Taiwan. Lastly, he was the Man-
aging Director of the specialist
foundation engineering division at
Züblin in Stuttgart.
“I am very glad that we were able
to get a very experienced and
competent expert like Mr. Haeh-
nig on board,” affirms Walter
Haus. He himself will be work-
ing somewhat reduced hours
in 2018, taking care of matters
concerning various special tasks,
such as activities in associations,
organizing various BST events
and, above all, further support-
ing the operations departments,
in close consultation with Frank
Haehnig.
Is he finding it difficult to bid adieu
to the company? “Of course, I
look back very fondly at my time
in Bauer. I am especially proud
of my team of regional and com-
mercial managers, who I hope
will continue to work together as
well in the future as they have up
until now.” However, he has al-
ways believed that things would
function even without him. He
looks forward to having more
time in the future to pursue oth-
er interests, such as gardening,
skiing and cycling, modern ar-
chitecture and music or traveling
with his wife – to name but a few.

training of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH in mid-November – from engineering tolerance
and manufacturing precision in specialist foundation engineering to the planning process
and documentation as well as innovations in construction material. Hans-Gerd Haugwitz
and Wolfgang Harttig welcomed the participants, about 70 in number, from the domestic
business division, from Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and from the International
Projects and Services team, the BST Purchasing Department and Bauer Umwelt. Presen-
tations on occupational health and safety (HSE) as well as ethics management formed an
integral part of the one-and-a-half-day event. There were ample opportunities for sharing
experiences and for discussions. Lastly, the participants had the opportunity to visit the
Aresing plant.

the conference center in Schrobenhausen for the traditional corporate meeting.
“Information is the central theme of our corporate culture,” said Prof. Thomas
Bauer, who opened the one-and-a-half-day event on Sunday afternoon with his
speech. In addition to organizational topics, the Chairman of the Management
Board of BAUER AG also spoke about the development of the business of the
Group as well as the political and social conditions in the world. Strategic sub-
jects and issues of the future were also touched upon – especially digitization
and “greening”, that is, the necessary measures to be taken to achieve climate
