EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION (ECI)

- Is a support and educational system for very young children at the age of birth to three years, who
have been victims of, or who are at high risk of child abuse and or neglect as well as a children who have
developmental delays or disabilities.

HISTORY

• progression from special education for children with disabilities.

• states in the US put into place a program where the child’s pediatrician can recommend a child
for early intervention screening in 1990

• The IDEA part C, mandates statewide, comprehensive, multidisciplinary service system to


address the needs of infants and toddlers who are at-risk.

MISSION

The mission of early childhood intervention is to assure that the families who have at-risk children in this
age range receive resources and supports that assist them in maximizing their child’s development in
terms of: PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE and SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL

E.C.I includes the following:

SERVICES

1.ASSISTING TECHNOLGY DEVICES AND SERVICES

-Equipment and services that are use to improve or maintain the abilities of child to participate in such activities
as: Playing, Communication, Eating, Moving.

2. AUDIOLOGY

-identifying and providing services for children with hearing loss and prevention of hearing loss.

3. FAMILY TRAINING

-Services provide by qualified personnel to assist the family in understanding special needs of the child
and in promoting the child’s development.

4. MEDICAL SERVICES

-only for diagnostic or evaluation purposes

5. COUNSELING

-Gives guidance and instruction to the children, parents and families for mental health.

6. NURSING SERVICES

Assessment of the health status of the child for the purpose of providing nursing care to:

• Prevent health problems

• Restore and improve functioning

• Promote optimal health and development

This may also include administering medications, treatments, and other procedure prescribed by the
licensed physician.

7. NUTRITION SERVICES
Services that helps address the nutritional needs of children that includes identifying:

• Feeding skills

• Feeding problems

• Food habits

• Food preferences.

8. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPHY

Services that relate to:

• self-help skills

• Adaptive behavior and play

• Sensory motor

• Postural development

9. PARENT TRAINING – Parenting education

10. PHYSICAL THERAPY

Services to prevent or lessen movement difficulties and related functional problem.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

Administering and interpreting psychological test and information about:

• child’s behavior

• child and family conditions related to learning

• Mental health and development

12. SERVICE COORDINATION

• Someone who works in partnership with the family by providing assistance and services
that help the family to coordinate and obtain their rights under the early intervention program.

13. SOCIAL WORKS SERVICES

• preparing an assessment of the social and emotional strength and needs of the child
and family, and providing individual or group services such as counselling or family training.

14. SPECIAL INSTRUCTION

Promote and enhance the child’s development by:

 Designing learning environment and activities


 Providing the families with information, skills and support.

15. SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY

Services for children with delay in communication skills or motor skills such as weakness of
muscles around the mouth.

16. THERAPEUTIC EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSROOMS

Providing developmentally appropriate learning environments, and staffed by trained early


interventionists.

17. VISION SERVICES


identification of children with visual disorders or delays and providing services and training to
those children.
